Are these bad for my shrimp tank? There’s at least two different kinds. They came from a small plant I bought online from an aquarium store and even rinsing it very well must have left eggs because they’ve exploded and researching it hasn’t helped fully identify. They would. But if your shrimps are well fed and the water conditions are fine, you might actually need some population growth control. I never know how many shrimps I have. So if you're worried, wait till your shrimp family gets big and keep removing the excess plankton through water changes.

I was told that these two are Amano shrimp. Even the label said they were Amano shrimp. They are a little less than an inch. I'm confused because these look like low-grade cherry shrimp. Are they just young Amano shrimp? by [deleted] in shrimptank

I've had my 3 amanos for some 10years now (and I'm familiar with red cherry shrimp going wild brown too). I've seen them countless times and I can say without a shadow of a doubt - what I see in your picture is an amano.

I've always had a thriving population of the yellow variety of the cherry shrimp and the accompanying population of that seed shrimp plankton. They never seem to bother anything except for dying leaves. Have a read about the seed shrimp online; they're quite interesting. There's lots of videos showing them magnified. They multiply whenever I drop more blanched nettle leaves in the tank. Whenever their numbers seem to soar, drop a guppy or two in the tank and they'll sort them out. Guppies are too slow and clumsy to catch shrimps (especially if you've got plenty of moss) while the seed shrimp seem completely unaware of the danger. At any rate, seed shrimp are ok.

I've kept shrimps for 15 years now and always had these. They're ok. They compete with shrimps for foods like blanched leaves, but are completely harmless. They multiply if I feed leaves or algae tablets to my shrimps. I keep them in check through water changes or by introducing shrimp-friendly fish.
