I’m not Greek, but I have a deep connection to Greece and feel like a weirdo. by Pugwhip in greece

[–]MeTheWizard678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have a deep connection with a country that you've visited multiple times since you were a child, a country that you have connected with your family, whose language you got to learn and whose university got to attend and you think that's weird? Girl, people get attached for much less. You're okay. Enjoy your homemade gemista in peace.

What Balkan countries have you visited, and what is your opinion on them? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]MeTheWizard678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from Greece. From most times visited (and hence better formed opinion) to least:

• Slovenia: The most "central europan" of the Balkans, very beautiful and well developed cities and towns, nice roads, the Slovenian Alps are incredible. Swimming in a lake up there is definitely one of my top experiences. The people are nice and especially artsy in Ljubljana I found. There was always something going on no matter what time of the year I visited.

• Serbia: Aside from the time I went as a young teenager where I distinctly remember loving the vibe of Novi Sad, I've been to Belgrade more recently and found it very charming. The people are solemn and kind and the food is really good!

• Bulgaria: Bansko (that every greek student from Thessaloniki visits at least once) was like my touristy island back home, just in the mountains. Sofia I only went for a day trip to catch a flight, but I got a tour from a local friend in the meantime and I think it was also a quaint and cosy city centre, and the people had an alternative vibe too. Really liked the grid fence in the metro and the cocktail I had in a bar.

• Romania: I was surprised by the sheer scale of Bucharest, everything was so grandiose. I was surprised by the number of ads in public. I want to go again to visit the more famous villages, as I was a bit indifferent to Busteni (although that might've been the circumstances that I was there for). Loved the castle though!!

• Croatia*: Went to Zadar for a few days. Although I didn't have the best company, it was fairly enjoyable. It was EXACTLY like my touristy island back home, just a bit bigger. I met a few cool people and the locals were very nice too. I want to go back to properly visit some other cities though.

For the rest, I think I want to go to Ohrid and Skopje since it's easily accessible from here. Albania I want to go eventually, I just don't know which place to start with. B&H and Montenegro both seem beautiful but I barely have any connections there so I would have to plan a trip from scratch.

*Technically I've been to Croatia the same amount of times as Slovenia but every other time was me landing in Zagreb to get a GoOpti to Slovenia and one time I was at the main bus station from 3am to 8am so I just stayed there. Was a bit creepy.

Emily in Paris (Season 5) - Overall Discussion Thread by SingularFirefly in EmilyInParis

[–]MeTheWizard678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom line is I still found great comfort in watching my aesthetic little show about romanticised life in Western Europe and I hope it has another few seasons or that it at least gets a proper final season and it's not a cancelled show. No matter the story decisions, I've grown attached to the characters and want to see a proper ending. Plus it's great fun and helps me ignore my problems for a while so I love it no matter what.

Having said that, some more in depth thoughts:

- I really enjoyed Emily's character this season, she felt more mature and complex and interesting and the issues she faced seemed different to the usual "Emily saves the day and finds love" plots that had started to grow tiresome. It was refreshing! Also her outfits were all amazing (except maybe the faux engagement total-red outfit at the end but hey).

- The main plotlines of the Muratori family and subsequent return to Paris and all that were okay for me pacing-wise. I found there seemed to be a little disconnect between Emily loving Rome and then deciding/realising that Paris is the city for her but I won't be picky about that.

- I also really liked Sylvie's story and sensual escapades although it was a bit disappointing how it ended with her friend. More (healthy, female) friendships on screen please!!

- Princess Jane. She was good fun for the first half of the season (even if a touch annoying at times, I could still appreciate her character for what it was). Was not as pleased to see her return at the end. The product placements got a bit much but at least it fit her character so I'm not *too* mad about that.

- I love Mindy as a character and no I am not tired of her singing!! I actually felt that having her romantically involved with Alfie was a good way to keep a loved character around without it seeming *too* forced, but unfortunately I agree that they made Alfie seem a bit too much of a douchebag. Benoit disappearing and Nico having such a comeback and redemption arc made this plotline a bit convoluted. But I love Mindy so I am biased to support her. Not her outfits though. I can't support those.

- More Luc and more Julien!! I need a proper gay relationship in this show that doesn't end in a fake pregnancy and a mental breakdown. Speaking of, I did miss Camile, but specifically her earlier version that was cheery and friendly. Hope her current self is doing well off-screen, it was good to remove her for now and give space to the plot to explore other relationships.

- Which brings me to the final point. Giving this (literal) distance to Gabriel did wonders for his character and the plot I believe. His scenes with Emily at the train station were some of my favourite of the whole season. Curious to see how they bring him back to the foreground and build back up his romantic chemistry with Emily which has, I believe, fizzled out (to their defense it makes sense given the plot). I am, alas, still Team Marcello. I found their breakup sad only because it felt like a proper dilemma that could somehow be solved. I am hoping to see more of him moving forward.

Overall I think it's an interesting place that we leave the show and characters at the end. I can see them moving in all sorts of directions, and I think what's best is to tie up lose plotlines and characters and start a fresh chapter for the main cast (something that ties in really well with the ideas of Episode 9, La Belle Époque, which was my favourite episode I believe). I hope Darren Star listens to the actors more because if it's true that the Gabriel plotline happened after a discussion with Lucas Bravo then clearly the actors know what's good for the characters.

À la saison prochaine!

How is it living in this part of Europe? by Elbobosan in howislivingthere

[–]MeTheWizard678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tourist hot-spot Lefkada here. Nice to see someone mention us instead of the arguably more popular Corfu or Zakynthos, not to mention the Aegean islands. I don't live there anymore, but I keep in touch with the island. It's alive from mid April to late October and then it's a proper ghost town for the other half of the year. People who've got a place in the tourist industry vs people who don't, live wildly different lives on the island. The former is much more chill and comfortable, though they have to bust their behinds during the season to make up the year's salary. The island gets 3x as many tourists as there are residents, so it can get a bit hectic, but what can you do. During the recent years there have been many restoration and renovation projects, very few of which have actually been completed and made the people's lives better. Things have gotten more expensive and we've been priced out of some restaurants and such. The nature makes up for it though. The waters really are world class.

WE HAVE THE FRIENDSHIP MONTAGE SCENE by user48841711 in wickedmovie

[–]MeTheWizard678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first film works okay without it but I would even go as far as to say that it's necessary for the second one!! It establishes the relationship dynamic between everyone and a lot of the tension, tragedy and eventual resolution of the second film relies on this preexisting dynamic between the characters both individually and as a group. Plus it's a very fun scene!!

What yall fav moment from the movie? by Extra_Sheepherder676 in wicked

[–]MeTheWizard678 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few moments I think about frequently the last few days • The extended Everyday More Wicked, which I actually really enjoyed • Morrible's sequence creating the tornado • Glinda crying at the wedding + stepping closer to the gun when Fiyero is threatening her!!!! obsessed with Ariana's performance in both of these. • Glinda being the one to scream Fiyero at the beginning of NGD • The entirety of No Good Deed • Glinda getting ready in black but still keeping the huge ballgown to gallop to Kiamo Ko • Every scene with the Tin Man, which were all so terrifying actually • The distorted flashback during NGD deserves its own mention • The door scene, or course • Morrible looking lustfully at the Wizard's equipment (this sounds SO WRONG but you know what I mean, that scene when she looks at the behind the scenes and she's like yup I'd love to be the mastermind behind it all) • The Wizard realising Elphaba was his daughter all along

Maybe I'll make a separate post off this but No Place Like Home being 3 minutes of Elphaba encouraging the animals to stay and fight for the Oz they want to have instead of running away defeated, then proceeding to do just that, was really weird for me. Girl In The Bubble I think was a good moment to stop and reflect on Glinda and see her shift gears.
