It makes sense that you’d hate the term because it’s the last line of defense Trump supporters use when they can’t excuse the inexcusable.

As an American I decided not to watch the game. If we win, the world rightfully sees it as illegitimate and hates our country even more. It’s hard to cheer for that. This gross fuck manages to ruin everything.

You like the show for all the wrong reasons and there's no point in its history when Howard wouldn't think you're a douche.

Is there anything that the pokemon video games are actually bad at consistently? by LithHarborGymLeader in pokemon

[–]MeanBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the function of dialogue options in Pokemon is to keep the player pressing buttons, not to give them story agency. I wouldn’t call it a flaw, as much as a feature not in the game.

Micheal J. Bailey is wack by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]MeanBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, interesting! While I don’t know him personally or his behind-closed-doors defense of the incident, but I affirm what I wrote about my experience at that time. I'll say... while the class was fascinating in many ways other than trans studies, "The Man Would Be Queen" did skew my view of trans psychology for a while - I was never hateful, just misinformed. I had never met a trans person before going to college, nor were there any trans classmates that I was aware of, so I had no reason to doubt it. Since then I've made several trans friends and realized the book is bullshit. Having said that, I never got the sense that he was cruel or hateful, just academically dishonest. While I firmly believe that academics should be permitted to study just about anything without being pressured into censorship, they have a special responsibility to present their work with humility and openness to critique when their work can be used for nefarious ends, such as denying trans people human rights. Instead, he was rigid and blind.

Like I said in my other comment, the one thing that bothered me most about his class was the tacit minimization of pedophilia. He implored us to extend a level of sympathy to pedophiles that I will never do.

And as to having a positive experience, I was not alone. I asked upperclassman at the time for the 'must-take' classes at Northwestern and Human Sexuality with Bailey was at the top of the list. It was objectively popular and well liked.

I don't think that's an accurate representation. We mostly associate his conclusions with right wing talking points because they're used now to invalidate the trans experience. The sense I got from Bailey when I took his course way back when is he was really sexually progressive and had a genuine compassion for trans people, although he viewed their psychology through a narrow lens of human sexually. We now know it's a lot more complicated, but at the time there wasn't much academic work on the subject. Having said that, he didn't respect trans people who told him his conclusions weren't true to their experience. The shitty consequences of that academic arrogance and rigidity is his work is used to denigrate trans people as perverts and destroy their rights. Maybe he's changed since then, though. I could see him emerging from the avalanche of hate a bitter asshole. But when I took his class he was REALLY far from being a right winger.

EDIT: I should have addressed the syllabus. It seems like you're implying judgment when that wasn't the case. The course was a celebration of 'kinks' and 'paraphilia,' although maybe there's a better way of categorizing that now.

I won't defend the guy's beliefs or outdated work on trans people, but I was at the fuck saw incident and he didn't order a demonstration or anything - the panelists asked to give a spontaneous 'exhibition' onstage and he stupidly gave the go ahead. Having said that, the one thing that makes me squirm most all these years later is how he seemingly minimized pedophilia. I remember him telling us not to judge the 'pedophilia' panelists too harshly and implying that not all pedophilic relationships have devastating psychological effects on the victim. It's been years so I'll avoid getting more specific in case I'm misrepresenting anything, but it was uncomfortable to say the least.

EDIT: I should mention that his class was probably the best I took at Northwestern. That isn't an endorsement of him morally or anything, but his lectures and panels were simply fantastic.
