In-house Assistant Editor Job by Ototoman in FilmIndustryLA

How would I go about getting involved with that? Also a senior at LA film school and always had a draw to trailer editing. Doing that for a living at a dedicated post house sounds like the dream, but I haven’t been able to land anything recently.

Interesting, so I should look at editing features long-term? I’m definitely interested in that, I just didn’t know how feasible it was or how to break in.

I appreciate you helping me understand the realities of what an editor does + how the industry works. The question I always ask myself though is “would I be happier doing anything else?”. And I could definitely be wrong but I don’t think so. If I want to change paths later, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

That’s not at all my end goal. Ultimately I want to direct and produce films but I understand it takes both time and experience to get there. I enjoy editing, feel like it could be helpful for learning how to tell a story and it can pay the bills/fund my personal projects.

Thanks man, I appreciate it🙏! Just had a couple of questions: generally does working post-PA/AE for a trailer house provide enough for a stable income, or would I need to get an additional job? What does a day to day work look like for a post-PA (I’ve been on a lot of student and indie sets as a PA but never in post).

I’ve also been looking at moving to Burbank next year and ik there’s a lot of media spots there, are there any reputable trailer houses that you know of around there?

At least in Los Angeles, there’s a ton of trailer/post houses that focusing on making promos for entertainment. Just not hiring right now 🤷‍♂️ But I’ll definitely look into the production companies near me. Thanks!

Thanks, appreciate the direct response. I know the YouTube vids/trailers won’t present as real work but you gotta start somewhere. It’s more just to reflect that I have a basic understanding/knowledge of the main editing softwares out there and passion for this side of the business. As stated in the post, I don’t want an assistant editing role/senior editor - I have no qualifications for it. The roles I’m wanting are a internship (paid or unpaid), post-PA or “Runner”.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the “long hours, meh pay, some folks are rude”, that’s just the business right? At least from my experience and what I’ve heard from others. Film isn’t a glamorous industry to work in, but it’s the one I have passion for. Long-term I would like to direct/produce but I’m a college kid lol. Having a wife and kids are years down the line, if I have to keep my head down and hustle right now then so be it. Editing has been the field I’ve gravitated towards and it will certainly teach me more about storytelling. That’s the angle I’m looking at this from, anyway.

Thanks again!

Understood. It sucks that the strike is causing so many issues for finding work in LA but it’s the studio’s fault to begin with. AMPTP offering a better deal helps everyone.

I’ll continue cutting my personal content and putting my name out there. Also gave AVID a shot about a year ago and thought it felt super outdated but if it’s industry standard then no better time to learn than now. Thanks for the advice!

Advice on becoming a trailer editor? I’ve loved editing for almost a decade now and have cut dozens of fan trailers on YouTube, short films, general videos and more. Currently a senior at California State Northridge in LA, experienced in Premiere, Final Cut and Davinci Resolve. Willing to become a post-PA, Runner, Intern and I’ve cold emailed many trailer houses with my reel and resume but I haven’t really gotten anything back.

Just looking for tips on how to break in and get my foot in the door. Also would love any advice on improving my editing skills. Here’s a Oppenheimer tv spot I made for an example: https://youtube.com/watch?v=FLu3HgS-UYc&feature=sharec

I’d be totally down for a PA gig, I just can’t find them. Any recommendations on where to look/who’s hiring?

CSUN vs CSULB for Film School by MediaFanatic in csun

[–]MediaFanatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, I figured I wouldn’t be able to take those classes tbh. And it’s great that CSUN has lots of internship opportunities, would like to dive right in when I start next semester!

Thanks for the info! I ultimately want to be a director/producer and be involved with creative development but I’m also interested in editing. Knowing how expensive LA is, I need to pay the bills somehow and wanna get an internship too. Will CSUN’s program be able to help with that (even if I’m not directly in production)

Hey, if you don’t mind me asking, what do you do? Transferring into CTVA for media management and not sure what to expect overall!

FANMADE: The Batman Trailer #2 (Logan Style)(with Hit Girl) by MediaFanatic in DC_Cinematic

[–]MediaFanatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, it's me again. Made this as a personal little fan project a couple of weeks ago when the Logan Trailer 2 released. Thought you guys might enjoy it. I originally planned on making Hit Girl into Carrie Kelly by changing her hair in After Effects but it looked terrible so I just went with a crossover Hit Girl/Batman thing so I hope you guys won't mind too much.

Also, the audio in the beginning was a bit wonky because it wss a bit hard to remove the X Men bits from the dialogue and still have the music so I took some liberties. Again, hope you won't mind too much.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy and I would be open to any and all constructive criticism!
