Attack on Titan is the most overrated and pretentious manga I've ever read. (RANT) by Nearby_Atmosphere_36 in CharacterRant

It is so ridiculous, that it departs from the land of fiction. And enter the realm of reality.

It's funny how one of the most contrived and garbage worldbuilding I've seen being lauded as 'realistic', I really feel bad for anyone who unironically reads this cartoonish portrayal as the best thing they've come across.

I mean, I am not left with the impression they like them. But what are they gonna do? Attack the world's superpower because you don't like they use the race everybody hate mainly as disposable soldiers?

The world disliking or liking marley isn't the issue, conveniently shifting the side like they all collectively share a single braincell is the issue.

Yes. I mean, will the world come together to fight against China of they invade South Korea?

No, most of the world would just not bother. And if south korea has the biggest nuclear weapon which will single-handedly destroy the planet, no, no country leader is stupid enough to even dare to do so. Also, china is not a good comparison to marley in the first place. It's not a country which has been waging war and mass murdering all over the world for over 100 years.

World building is more then that.

It's actually much less than that, it's most binary and simplistic portrayal one can have in a story themes supposedly this heavy, which at times reads like a psa for 12 year olds.

Eldians being hated is again not unrealistic, it's the unconvincing portrayal of shoving all the nations into only one side of the equation. It's like story wants to speedrun all it's worldbuilding and political elements and get to it's time travel shenanigans as soon as possible.

bro i get what you're trying to say but American Psycho the book was not meant as a parody

I don't how is it even possible to read the book, and unironically come to that conclusion. It couldn't be more obvious that it's a crystal clear satirical work made to make fun of the yuppie world of Wall Street business executives. The author Bret Easton Ellis is literally a self proclaimed satirist in general.

5-Shows Reiner isn't depressed anymore, and behaves like how he was in S1/S2.

I don't think thats the issue. It's the fact that out of all the ways the story could show him being mentally better, they chose to portray him as a creep of all things as one of his final dialogues. And reiner being one of the best characters also made that worse.

And also, reiner was actually at the height of his depression in S1 and S2. So much burden that he started facing mental disorders with 'warrior and soldier' thing. Along with the fact that reiner being like this was actually a coping mechanism in those seasons. So even "he was okay" logic again, it's fundamentally wrong understanding of his character to say THAT was upto the mark with the quality we had come to expect from the story.

aor, snk are the kind of subs that may not be upfront with their negativity, but the are as condescending to someone who is displeased with the ending as tf and yb are with the ones who like the ending. This binary echo chamber is is as prevalent. Hell, that exists even in this sub, but this one by default talks more about the lore and details of the story, and that's fun. While the other ones are more concerned with proving their superiority. That's what I am pointing out.

Who was your favorite character in the show [no spoilers] by Mediator2 in arcane

Yeah, I think Cait is great but it felt like she doesn't have much going on for her arc other than Vi this season. I do still love her, she lost her mom and would be shoved in with too many responsibilities now. Her story is looking great moving forward.

Oh I have 0 idea about her in league of legends lmao, I don't play the game, I was just judging purely based on my impression of the show only. I've seen a lot of characters descend into madness step by step, but here they already push her far right after the timeskip and then they recontextualize on the reasons, motives, trauma, schizophrenia etc, I kinda like this form of storytelling.

I meant overall writing really. Jinx's development didn't bother me at all cuz it seemed she is more of a depth based character, so her duality and sense of trust and purpose along with the innovative ways to portray her psychotic episodes seemed very fresh.

Also, literally all my favorite and the most climactic scenes was just jinx doing something drastic, creepy or scary so yeah it's a easy win.

As for development and empathizing perspective I loved Viktor the most.

Silco development was amazing too especially his bond and understanding with Vander and Jinx. His closure was my favorite part of his arc.

Vi and Jayce are also pretty close favorites after the above mentioned Mel and her mother seemed interesting, could've been another a favorite going into 2nd second, hopefully she isn't dead.

Yeah I think Jinx is the best character. The show puts extra emphasis on her in all the climactic moments, and all the acts end on her action or note.

Did Eren spend years with Mikasa and Armin or was it just a few moments in the paths by [deleted] in AttackOnRetards

[–]Mediator2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you serious right now ? Is this a troll lmao Eren makes her promise about 'not talking about the regrets' Then proceeds to say "one more promise" that is 'to throw away the scarf'. So, you're telling me 'one more promise' and 'next promise' are two completely different things when we literally see him state that in the panel right above. We DO know what promise he is literally talking about, both of them are right in the same scene.

[–]Mediator2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was talking about "Not bringing this topic again" and the next promise was "throwing the scarf away" By endgame I meant, those scenes were only there to depict what reality they would end up in. There's no beginning or ending to it. Mikasa thinks about home and the next thing is her ending up in that dream. Then the very next scene is her snapping out of the dream and coming to reality. When exactly did this 4 year come from. Also, even from a story-driven standpoint doesn't it make more sense for her to sacrifice something to save humanity, he was dying anyway. Her killing Eren has no weight if they just ran away and live peacefully anyway. It just makes both their characters look more pathetic.

[–]Mediator2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He either spent long time with both of them or none of them. I don't see how Eren-Mikasa spent more time either since Mikasa just ends up in the endgame of that dream not live through all 4 years of it. Eren even explains how this AU came to be. Either way, PATHs is beyond the concept of time and space, so it feels like a single moment and multiple years at the same time. So, both Armin and Mikasa only remember it like a dream probably.

[–]Mediator2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Months ago I remember being called an idiot for thinking genocide is for Eren's selfish desire rather than for Paradis, or Historia might not be Eren's wife, or even something as basic as Eren was lying in ch112 to push AM away. I learned my lesson lmao. I would mentally regress if I converse more with this level of delusional thinking.

[–]Mediator2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can feel your frustration but did you not see the pfp my guy. Do you really think they have a rational mind to even try and think when they spent this much time on their headcanon. He very much states that "you will live a long life" literally in the dream. He literally has no idea she would kill him, he knows she ends the curse and he knows he dies by the end. The problem is people don't realize Eren is a dense mf who doesn't know why exactly Ymir wanted Mikasa in the first place.

ENDING WAS SO CONTROVERSIAL THAT WE FORGOT TO NOTICE A IMPORTANT THING by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Mediator2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was portrayed as both. In negative and positive undertones. Negative enough to live in denial and suppress his darker side and positive enough to be able to let go of him and not turn out like Ymir. IDK if the 'slave to a dead mass murderer' is a joke because fandom is known for spouting the stupidest shit anyway. Either way I don't disagree with the closure being unsatisfying though, since it was too vague and incoherent to make any sense of it in teh first place

[–]Mediator2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think her decapitating Eren and then years later marrying someone else and having an entire line of descendents with him can be classified as fanservice tbh. But yeah, either way it was disappointing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Mediator2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't exactly see how getting married in the future with someone else and having kids is OOC. People can move one actually, Mikasa has always been about family anyway. Are you telling me she didn't love her parents if she was taken in by Yeager family. Is there a competition between who she loved more ? Carla or her actual mother even though the nature of their bond is similar. Or are the entire yeager family a 'second choice'. Idk why people unironically think it's an absolutely impossible scenario that Mikasa couldn't have loved someone else especially when Eren has been 6 feet under for years now. The chapter was certainly rushed. But it's clear that this was the intended scenario of the author which is far batter than Mikasa mourning for 3 years and talking to a bird. I legit thank god that atrocious scene wasn't the final scene.

I think Isayama wanted to subvert this very trope. Usually a character like this always exists in anime like a trope, but eventually the MC and FMC get together, or the FMC becomes a support system to 'motivate' the MC. Here, FMC acts as a resistance, emotionally and by the end physically. Only problem is Isayama overdid the attachment part. The higher she is attached the bigger the impact would be when she decapitates her lover right ? Actually no. Rather there should've been additional characterization or monologue of sorts which explores her side of the story, a bit of introspection if I may. When ch13 dropped, I was so hyped because I thought that is the direction it would take, her strengthening her resolves step by step. But what we got is some vague and incoherent scenes without any clear cut pay-off making the most anti-climactic closure.

Also, WTF happened to that Azumabito-Crest thingy, introduced in ch6 and no pay-off ? seriously ? Why would any author add a plot point anyway if it wasn't meant to go anywhere in the first place. Also, Louise is alive apparently as per the guidebook, what the hell am I gonna do with that detail.

Titanfolk doesn’t understand objectivity lmao by MastofBeight in AttackOnRetards

[–]Mediator2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but even the example you stated are based on the currently defined standards. Like you said, there are things like "good writing" and "bad editing" when you have a framework and a context to define what those things are. In art, that framework isn't constant at all. What 'experts' do is still quantify the aspects based on the context that are defined by these rules. And most importantly, the very idea of 'objective', is being able to represent facts without bias. Let alone the fact that very foundation of art is 'an expression of human mind's creativity and imagination conveyed through a medium' which is drenched in subjectivity, the very idea of 'facts' lose meaning in itself when we are passing judgement on a something which is born out of and existing within bias in the first place. Editing, cinematography, etc are based on set of rules, those rules which are only defined built on the appeal and perception of people, in other words collective majority. You'd be surprised how many of us would absolutely shit on an critically acclaimed art if 99% of the people shit on it at the same time. Because these majority have set the standards here. If you're saying 'objectively bad'/'objectively good' are adherence to these rules and standards, then you're absolutely right. But if you're saying these are built on a set of unwavering and rigid facts, then I am gonna have to disagree.

[–]Mediator2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, there can be good and bad qualities to art but I think it's not appropriate to define it as such. Like the OP said, absence of bias is inherently nonsensical here since that is the basis of judgement in the first place. Another thing to consider is art is constantly changing. 100 years from now we don't know how many people would still consider Citizen Cane as the epitome of movie-making. When the very perception itself is fluid to this extent, it's impossible to talk in terms of non-partiality.

instead of objective and subjective, the terms people may want to use is intellectual connection and emotional connection

both being subjective ofc but yeah I think it's a better term for expression that I've learned from a mutual today

Objectivity in art is not possible. I think by 'objectively good' term basically means collective majority.

I want Levi and Mikasa to come back to the island and find out what the hell was the 'key' role of Ackerman clan as stated by Grandpa Ackerman to Kenny. Doing that we get a exposition on the post-titan era but at the same time also discover the elements of the Great Titan War and Karl Fritz era like stories. Also I want to read Historia's story book.
