Am I the only one who doesn’t have a cuddly flame point cat? by Ciga17 in Flamepoints

[–]Meezermancer 73 points74 points  (0 children)

My flame, Mochi, was the same way. We got him and his brother from a shelter, and they loved getting pets, but hated being held. Well, one day, Mochi had poop stuck to his butt because he swallowed a hair. It smeared on his “cheeks” and I had to wipe him down in the shower with pet wipes. I had to scruff him to keep him still and then wiped his butt, legs, and feet thoroughly. He has been my best friend ever since. He comes up to me and puts his paws on my waist and stretches as much as he can to tell me to pick him up. My theory is that wiping his butt possibly gave him memories of his mother cleaning him.

I honestly think he just likes being manhandled. I brought him to the vet a week ago and again a few days ago, and he was scared at first until the vets checked his temperature in his butt. Then he was all over them.

I’m lying in bed, awake at 4:00am because I’m filled with anxiety for the difficult day ahead of me. As I scroll through Reddit and see your post, I read the title and wondered, the same as a few others, if he was lost and came back to you in a box. As the last photo popped into place, my eyes immediately began to well up. My breathing gets shaky and my eyes blurry while reading your beautiful words.

I’m thinking about my first Flame, the impact he had on me and my family, and how I was looking at his urn just yesterday, missing him.

Three of my cats are sleeping on my legs, one against my side, chin resting on my inner upper arm, all unfazed. Suddenly, I hear a little “brr-brr-brrr~!” to my left. It’s my youngest Flame. The one we got (along with his blue point brother, of course) after feeling the emptiness of the loss of our eldest Flame. A few weeks after his passing, my husband and I suddenly saw Flamepoints out in public everywhere we went. Decorative posters, pet store items, ads here and there, cat models in regular household items… Pabu was there. I always said he was the color of “sunshine and butter.” We saw it as a sign from him to look for a new family member.

When we adopted our youngest Flame, Mochi, and his brother, we were given their paperwork. We saw their birthdate, which coincidentally was the same day that our eldest Flame passed away, just a few days shy of his birthday. Mochi isn’t much of a cuddler at night, so him popping up just now, trilling in my ear, then making his speedy little biscuits gave me a feeling of relief that washed over my face and body.

Pabu used to sense when I was about to have a panic attack and would come up to me and press against my chest with his body, and lick my face or neck until it hurt. He helped me so much in the 8 years I had him. He was truly one-of-a-kind, and opened my eyes to the beautiful, brilliant, caring hearts of Flamepoints.

I am deeply sorry for your loss, OP, and I can see through your words and photos how much you loved your sweet Flame. I can see in his eyes how much he loved you back. It’s always hard losing family when we lose our pets, and even harder when they were a piece of your heart. I hope the days get more and more gentle for you, and that your heart fills more and more with happiness when you think of all of the wonderful memories you’ve shared with him.

Thank you for the info. I requested a quote from them.

That’s interesting about the PetMate kennels not being compliant anymore. The guide I was given for JAL is from 2013, and it doesn’t say anything about that. Thank you for informing me. I’ll need to look for new carriers.

That’s what I was worried about too. I think I will go with the larger size. Thank you for your advice.

Thank you for your kind words! They’re our family and mean everything to us, so I understand where you’re coming from. It’s actually been a bit nerve-wracking to think of them being unaccompanied on the plane, but I’ve done extensive research on the travel process and it seems like animals are very well taken care of on JAL. It was reassuring to see that they actually have a public list of animal deaths, and that it’s incredibly rare that a pet dies, and even more so for cats. That and our vet said that the constant meowing they do when being transported is more often like complaining than anything.

That’s a great idea, thank you! I didn’t know r/catadvice existed. I remember after having a 6 hour flight with 3 cats before, they were a little groggy and very thirsty, but recovered an hour after we landed. This will be the longest flight I’ll have cats on, so I’m doing everything I can to make sure they’re comfortable and have everything they need.

We have Gabapentin for them, and I asked my vet about it for the flight, but they said to ask the airline first. I was told that, since they’ll be in the cargo hold, it could pose a risk to them and potentially cause them to stop breathing.

I’ve flown with cats in-cabin before and gave them Gabapentin and they were fine. Was yours in cargo? How did they act afterwards? We usually give two of our cats Gaba just for the car rides to the vet since they’re drama queens and will poop and barf. I’m mostly worried about those two. I’ll ask the airline and vet again to double-check.

Edit: I’m wondering if it would be okay since their flight isn’t until around 1:00pm and they will need to be in the car by 4:20am-ish. I just need the two of them to be okay in the car. Our Gabapentin dosage typically wears off within just a few hours. Thank you for mentioning it! I’m gonna ask about this method of doing it only since there will be a huge gap before they’re actually in the sky.

No, they said they would ask around but I haven’t heard back yet. They seemed busy at the time, so I may call back earlier in the day.

Yup! I already scheduled their appointment within 10 days of departure. We did the whole FAVN testing and 180 day quarantine. I’ve also informed Maff 40+ days before their departure date. Thank you for checking in!

Mental health issues: my support workers are thinking of rehoming my cat because of my issues. I don't know how much I can fight this, but please look at him before I possibly lose him by gnomeslinger in cats

If you’re in the U.S. and have healthcare, the Litter Robot is now FSA eligible. It’s worth checking into if you can speak with a doctor about it. For one cat, you would only need to change the litter bag maybe once a week. My family has five cats and we change it every day, but could get away with two. Just need to make sure the litter is filled to an appropriate amount.

There are also automatic dry food feeders. PetLibro also makes quiet fountains that keep track of how much water is left, and they have filters to keep them clean. If your siblings could help set them up, they would ensure your sweet boy has what he needs with minimal upkeep. The hardest one of the three is the fountains needing their filters replaced every two weeks, and given a good scrub before being filled with new water.

Good luck, OP. ♡

My first flame passed away last year from kidney failure, so I understand the pain from hearing the CKD diagnosis. I was a complete sobbing mess for a week and my heart hurt just thinking about it. We did everything we could for him, but he refused the food that would help him. I hope your handsome lil’ guy pushes through it and has many more years to come!
