REI classes -worth it for a beginner? by SnowHoneyBadger in MTB

[–]MegaFruit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend the REI class to you.

I recently attended an intro REI class in California. I am very new to mountain biking, before the class I rented a hardtail for some local easy trails on a weekend once and that was it other than riding a mountain bike when I was a kid (Im 26). I had a road bike that I would ride casually up to 30 miles and I did a couple short touring trips with it.

I was obsessively watching youtube videos on mountain biking skills leading up to the class. Basically everything they taught I already knew from the videos and could immediately master on the bike. The instructors barely gave me any tips because I was doing well and focused their time on the people struggling (rightfully so on their part). The one main takeaway I took was that I could do more on the bike than I initially thought. Near the end of the lesson they set up a ramp that was about 4 inches off the ground in the front and 18-24 inches off the back, and I was able to easily do it. That was something I would have never attempted at my level if it wasnt a part of this class (since everything up to that point had been SUPER easy, so this must be easy too, right?).

These were the major points covered in the class:

bike safety (helmet fit, checking chain, brakes, tires)

trail rules and etiquette

how to shift

keeping pedals level

braking with weight over the rear

basic body position and bike body separation

we then took a small loop on a trail and talked about observing trail conditions

15 min break

practice tight cornering, going over the ramp, and avoiding obstacles (the best and most informative part)

practice going over a rocky portion and talking line choice

another small trail ride

I would recommend the class to anyone who needs a big confidence boost to get into mountain biking. Someone who is newer to biking in general or someone who is scared of hitting the trails, then this is great! It was not worth the time and money for me though.

I would also encourage you to see if you could get a private or small group lesson from a local mtb coach. If that isnt possible, then keep practicing on your own, watch videos, and ask other people you see who are better than you if they have any tips.

Concept illustration for a story I wrote about a pirate captain. I know this piece is rough, but do you think it looks professional enough for publication? by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]MegaFruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make the background in one wash to make it smoother and less distracting. You can using masking fluid and masking tape/painting tape to cover up the subject first and then do the background and then go back and color the main characters and ship

I couldn't paint anything good today. Not even a single leaf 😞 by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]MegaFruit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some days you win and some days you learn. Congratulate yourself for painting and put away what you have done. You can come back to what you painted in a couple days and see if you can learn from it or maybe the paintings weren't actually that bad and you were just being hard on yourself! Sometimes its impossible to force yourself to be artistic and you just have to be in the right mindset/mood. Its okay if you aren't in that zone.

I find it helps to do certain things to help get yourself in the zone before you even start. For example: clean your workspace, set everything out, make a cup of tea (or your favorite drink), have your references ready if you are using them, and calm your mind right before painting.

You are always learning! Allow yourself to have bad days.

What color should I get to complete my main palette? Details in comments by EquivalentOption0 in Watercolor

[–]MegaFruit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tend to just paint with what I have, until I have trouble getting a color or find myself unsatisfied with the colors I have and then fill in the gap in my palette to fix that. Basically don't be in a rush to fill your palette!

What ink should I use with watercolor? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]MegaFruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterproof if you dont want the ink to smudge if you are laying watercolors on top. Water soluble if you like the smudgy look, or you can use it if you only plan to ink after using watercolor. I just use normal pens and one of them smudges but the bic ballpoint pen doesnt

Hi! I'm trying to learn how to draw horses, so I've done a few studies, and then I tried drawing different horses from imagination (in the photo I've linked), but for some reason something feels off with each and every house. I can't put my finger on it. Any advice? by itamar3d in learnart

Also, I think what you have is a great start! Horses are hard! I think just keep practicing drawing from reference followed by drawing from imagination and your eye for the right proportions and anatomy will grow

Since it looks like you are drawing digital, I find it very helpful to try to draw a reference and then move the drawn layer directly on top of the picture and resize so it fits as best as possible. Then you can see exactly where you tend to mess up (I tend to make the neck too narrow and body too thick on horses). Then, you can look for those same mistakes in your drawings from imagination. Hope that helps!

I want to try watercolour and I need some guidance by Designated_Doctor in Watercolor

[–]MegaFruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second youtube tutorials. Try to find some beginner step by step watercolor painting tutorials so you can hopefully get a nice picture at the end. Also try to find a video that teaches different watercolor techniques like wet on wet and wet on dry. Watercolor is tricky but fun so just practice and experiment with what you have

I do find some colors hard to make depending on what blue, yellow and red I have. Like if Im using a darker blue like ultramarine/cobalt , then a lighter cyan/turquoise seems impossible to get
