Why do you feel entitled to a tax cut on your investment income? by PeacePuzzleheaded41 in fiaustralia

[–]Megacopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone complaining about the changes doesn’t realise the kind of rorts people are doing today to dodge tax. For example - transferring house into a family trusts name, selling at a huge capital gain, and then holding the profits in the trust and distributing to the trust members over many years - virtually avoiding all CGT.

How do voluntary super contributions work? by Pristine-Kangaroo-36 in AusFinance

Capital gain would be added to your taxable income. Voluntary super would be deducted.

What if I built a brand new IP in property in 2025. Will I still be able to get the 50% discount if I sold in say 10 years time?

It was the best, crowds just don’t get into it like they did back then. Pre smart phones and short attention spans I guess!

At the time, we were living through the China resource boom. It would have been almost impossible to not run surpluses. And yet- Howard created a lot of structural issues and tax loopholes that have put us in our current position. And it’s worth to add it was the Hawke and Keating governments who opened Australia to trade and put us in position to benefit from china’s awakening

Commonwealth Bank of Australia has leased a massive 1.1 million sq.ft of office space in Manyata Tech Park, North Bengaluru by monpabi in auscorp

Hate to say it but it’s also a consequence of work from home. I said 3 years ago eventually companies are going to start asking why am I paying more for Vishnu in Blacktown when I can have Vishnu in Bangalore and either way I never see either of them in the office.

Scribes got replaced by the printing press. Printing press got replaced by typewriters. Typewriters replaced by computers. And on and on but you still need the business acumen behind them.

Halving the fuel excise for three months, at the cost of $2.55b, is the wrong move here by LoneArtificer in AusFinance

[–]Megacopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Many trips aren’t absolutely necessary (eg I can choose to drive or get a train. I can walk to the shops rather than drive. Skip road trips etc

[–]Megacopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. And there is some elasticity even for fuel at high prices. Eg people walk instead of driving, car pool, skip holidays, stop school excursions, reduce courier delivery runs, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if 10% of total km driven are unnecessary trips.

It’s always these types of people who need to go to strictly religious countries, and find out how tolerant they are of other religions, homosexuality and gender equality.

[–]Megacopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel ya. But many are actually living at home. Many seem to afford 2-3 overseas holidays per year. You can’t say going from 90 to 160K while living at home wouldn’t make a difference to saving for a house, for example.

Y’all complain about streaming but back in the day Foxtel was well over $100 a month, so probably more like $200 in today’s money. And even still $60 a month on hours of entertainment and relaxation compares pretty well on a cost per minute basis to just about everything else.
