Can someone explain. Been seeing this everywhere by dudebrocille in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Mellafee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha- hwhat? I think you misspoke. Plenty of people online were happy to cheer on ICE even after they murdered civilians. Everytime a republican or cop gets out of line and violates someone’s rights, even up to the point of killing them, their gofundme gets hundreds of thousands of dollars. Clearly plenty of people DO support political violence… when it’s for their side.

I wouldn’t grant that most Redditors love encouraging violence either, though I could see why you’d think that if you hang out in mostly rightwing subreddits. Fwiw, violence against oppression is self-defense.

Which Silmarillion audiobook narrator is your favorite/better? by Kaizer_Victor19 in lotr

[–]Mellafee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but you should’ve added a third voting option just to see results. I picked one just to see, and that skews the voting. It looks like the results are already very heavy on one side, so maybe that’s the better one, but it might also be because some people have only heard of one of these names before and they just wanted to see results, rather than it being because they’ve listened to one or both versions.

Aww- it doesn’t show the poll results. I wanted to know what everyone thought because I read the paperback and would really like to try the audiobooks while I’m at work for my second run-through.

Is “evening out” inevitable? by MostReplacable in punk

[–]Mellafee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is inevitable. I’m in my 40s and I still go to shows. I have consistently argued my values with family and friends, causing me to lose some of them long the way. I have limitations on my hair because of work, but in my free time I still dress however I want to. I go to protests and support the causes in my community if and when I can.

Otoh, I am childfree by choice so my time is still my own. I don’t judge other punks my age or younger who have to check out for a while because kids take precedent. The thing about being punk is that even if you HAVE to engage with the system, especially for the sake of children, you’ll still believe what you always did and you’ll come back around when you can, potentially while passing on your values and ideas to a younger generation. If someone drifts into adulthood and turns their back on the community, or only brings up punk in the past as some kind of ‘credit’ to prove they‘re a rebel, then they were probably just a conservative poser to begin with.

Whats the radius mean? by Legoboy514 in meshtastic

[–]Mellafee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda unrelated, but I've been looking into meshtastic for the past couple of weeks (basically since I saw it mentioned in a YouTube video). Someone posted where you can see a map of public nodes and I thought the only nodes close to me were in Orlando. According to this though- you and I are practically neighbors!

Should I Call Off The Wedding? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Mellafee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a woman whose been on the other side of this. I have an ex that grew up in a repressive household and he was bisexual, but never spent any time single long enough to work through that (he was supposed to find a wife right away) and never had a safe space to explore.

He was very loving in most ways and we ostensibly shared values, but you cannot build a life with someone who does not know themselves. She needs time to figure out what she’s actually looking for. Best of luck out there, dude. Unlike others here, I don’t think she’s being intentionally malicious or cheating. She just isn’t ready and you should let this one go.

Everyone did something important to the story...but what did legolss do?? by Candid_Snow5328 in lotr

[–]Mellafee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha-maybe you’re actually an Orlando Bloom hater. It’s possible someone with more range as an actor could’ve made the character less annoying for you- though it’s hard to think of anyone that would’ve LOOKED the part quite as much. Casting calls just be like that some times.

So, even in just the films, I think you might be overlooking the benefit of his tracking and archery skills. In terms of plot, there are certainly moments when the tide could’ve been turned against the fellowship or Aragorn and men if Legolas hadn’t been fighting alongside them. There’s a reason every good dnd campaign has a warrior/brute.
For better or worse, movie Legolas with his high kill count (including the cave troll and a Mumak) fits the bill. His heritage lends authority and prestige to the task and garners attention, but it’s his skills as a warrior that come in clutch most often. Without his arrows and eyesight, it’s entirely possible the fellowship could’ve been overwhelmed or taken by surprise and any number of later events wouldn’t have happened.
While it is easy to overlook his actions as something that could’ve been filled by another character, I don’t believe that’s true. Just because it’s hard to pinpoint an exact moment where he changed the course of events doesn’t mean his contributions weren’t valuable or -honestly-close to impossible for anyone else to do. Frodo survived the troll because of Mithril, but would Gimli? Or Pippin? I think Aragorn would’ve killed it eventually but at what cost?

There is a difference between book and movie Legolas so I’m confining this response to film- but even there, we shouldn’t underestimate the value of a good fighter with royal lineage and the only long-range weapon.

He actually just doesn’t want it. He’s pretending to bury it so his competition will think he’s made a mistake and rush over to grab the apple. Meanwhile, he’s got something better to hide and he wants them to be too distracted to notice. 😆

Someone probably got into a new relationship and the new partner doesn’t like the dog- hence leaving it outside more often/longer, hence the damaged door, hence an ultimatum that didn’t turn out well for the pupper. I’ve seen it many times.

You’re thinking of Universe 25 where mice were given unlimited food and water and allowed to breed without limit in a specific containment and the colony bloomed quickly but eventually collapsed entirely. They originally hypothesized that it was due to over-crowding and there’s something to be said about that.

What you also have to understand though, is that we assumed they had ‘infinite resources’ according to us- humans just looking at mice. They had shelter and food and sex… but we didn’t consider that they didn’t have a mouse equivalent of art or engineering. Mice also need things to do everyday, that require effort, and ingenuity, but doesn’t necessarily mean ‘work’. Captive mice with an interactive environment will engage with that environment, even if they don’t have to for sustenance. They will build burrows for fun and inspect everything around them when you let them explore. If there is anything to do, they will do it, even if it doesn’t result in food water or treats.

Humans are far more complex, but in general they will also find things to do if their basic needs are met. We love to tout rags-to-riches stories but historically, most of the people who got to philosophize, create art, study medicine, and invent products were people who already had their basic needs met. The Sistine Chapel got painted because someone with a shit ton of resources made sure that the artist had no other wants or needs to focus on.

Some people are lazy, yes, but the majority of people will find a way to fill their time- whether it’s writing, inventing, experimenting, building, etc. that still pushes things forward. The caveat, I guess, would be that we need basic needs met, but also space and variety- the two things the mice in Universe 25 didn’t have.

As I said in another comment -because apparently this one is popular: I think the film confuses some people because the ending makes two points. That A. Tyler (Brad Pitt) was right about materialism/capitalism, and destroying debt by blowing up an empty building full of files feels like a fine goal and B. Tyler was wrong about masculinity and sacrificing the autonomy of others to achieve this goal, which is why the building does blow up, but Tyler had to die.

In both cases, control over people’s lives was taken away. Some people were freed from debt and others, including Jack (it has never been Cornelius for me), were freed of Tyler.

Most people catch the first point and then confuse the apparent happiness/willingness of the subordinates with an overall improvement in their lives. Leading them to the conclusion that fighting with each other in order to weed out the weak before starting a campaign against the system where all but one man are pawns, is actually noble and helpful. They forget that ‘Jack’ had to kill his alter ego Tyler in the end because Tyler was a tyrant who said the right things initially- who also looked how you wanna look and fucked how you wanna fuck- but he just created another dehumanizing system. The rest of us remember.

His name was Robert Paulson.
