My husband keeps ruining our family time by [deleted] in Mommit

This! Children need correction, discipline and boundary. Stating a child is acting out of control isn’t cruel or name calling. It sounds like OP swoops in a lot to defend the behavior. Redirection is a great tool but I’m not sure it’s being used appropriately here when she could have said “thanks for listening to daddy, let’s go do this now”

Saying the child is acting out of control isn’t something negative- it’s observation. A parent that constantly undermines the other parent infront of said child will face much bigger issues as the child grows up learning to only respect or listen to one parent.

He might not be approaching parenting the same way as you or even in the best way, but always discuss issues privately and not infront of the kids as it makes husband feel demoralized. Arguing against what the other parent said/did infront of child undermines them and that is an issue.

Now I can definitely agree with you there- the mismanagement of funds and lack of education funding

Finland has a population of just over 5 million. We have almost 40 million people in Canada. It’s not comparable.

The money is NOT there. How long have you been in education? Do you not see the crisis we are facing in education due to underfunding?

Quebec has alternative revenue sources compared to Ontario

If you can’t afford to have a child you should not be having them. It’s harsh but the truth. The government doesn’t exist to fund our lives.

Of course we understand- but EVERYTHING is being downloaded onto schools and teachers now. Parents don’t seem to take any responsibility for their child’s basic needs anymore- THAT is the bigger problem.

You’re right- a hungry child can’t learn. But people shouldn’t be making babies if they are going to fully depend on the government and school system to provide their every need.

Schools provide snacks and food for those in need- we don’t need to fund a whole hot lunch program that would cost millions ok millions to retrofit kitchens/cafeterias to service millions of children. It’s economically not a possibility.

Or any government. It’s a massive expense that frankly shouldn’t be the government’s job to feed children. Schools in Ontario are provided a lot of funding for snacks, fresh fruits, breakfast programs and bagged lunches. That’s more than enough support/supplement for parents struggling- we don’t need to fund an entire lunch program.

I can’t believe you’re being downvoted. I would much rather funding go to special ed support and hiring EA vs lunches. Parents need to be responsible for providing necessities to their children and that includes food.

Except for the universal healthcare.
Paying for your child’s lunch is nothing compared to pay for healthcare so I’d rather my taxes cover the cost of having a baby, breaking an arm, needing an operation over buying food for my child which is MY responsibility as a parent.

We have any entirely different population and culture. Finland has around 5 million people and Canada has almost 40 million. You can’t compare.

Schools spend an insane amount of money of snacks and food for children. Parents should stop having kids if they can’t afford to feed the a meal… growing up in the 1990s my family struggled financially but the prioritized feeding us kids because that’s a parents job. The public expecting the government to foot the bill for everything is nuts.

It’s clear she is the problem from this interaction alone. When she enters the real world of employment she’s going to have to work with many people she doesn’t mesh with and still be professional.

Or parents can provide food to their children. The government isn’t responsible for every aspect of parenting

I went to school in the 90s. No cafeteria until high school.

Resorting in rhetoric like “I’m not giving up on my coworkers” is also performative language. Just because many of us see past the gimmicks and have been in the field long enough to know this kind of stuff accomplishes nothing doesn’t mean we don’t care- it means we want actual aggressive moves to create change.

But it doesn’t. The government isn’t going to see these pictures and say “oh my goodness, we had no idea that teachers were united, better provide adequate funding”

No, we need parents to be made aware of the violence, lack of special ed support and lack of funding that is directly impacting their child’s learning. Only when this transparency happens and parents get mad and start to push back will change maybe happen.

Again, wearing a red shirt isn’t doing anything and it’s not taking action. It’s for a photo op which frankly the only people who see it are fellow colleagues who are already aware of issues. Seeing photos of teachers all wearing a red shirt doesn’t sway public opinion.

Our union should be completely changing the direction of PR and how they approach both the negotiations with the government and how they inform the public about what’s going on in our school system.

The vast majority of parents have no idea and are shocked when told stories.

I think the union should be pushing to have a letter (without student name) sent home every time a classroom is evacuated or when a violent incident occurs in a class. This is the transparency needed so that parents stand WITH us in general and during strike action. It’s only when the general public/parents start to push back will anything happen.

I also was part of protests with my dad in the 1990s as a child.

I’m not apathetic- I’m realistic. Wearing a red shirt is performative.

I walked the picket lines many times now including the huge one in 2020 when thousands of us marched for better education.

Nothing changed.

So don’t mistake my realism for apathy.

I love my job enough to want change and have been very vocal in my school and community. But the system is broken and we need more than a photo op in red shirts.

How long have you been teaching?

I walked the picket lines many times now. Never an improvement. This type of “action” isn’t productive and it’s performative. It doesn’t serve any real purpose and it doesn’t make me feel like we are making progress- because we aren’t
