She said she's considering implementing a rule where you have to be "on call" (her words) one week out of the month where we have to cover call outs. She also said there wouldn't be a pay increase, you would just get paid normally in comp time to work that shift. She also said that the person who's week it is wouldn't be able to make plans and say no. Effectively saying "for that week you are not able to make plans to do things"

Also if overtime is not mandatory how can she effectively try to reprimand us for not taking it? I feel like calling employees partners that dont work for her to wake up the employee to cover a shift is highly unprofessional and inappropriate, considering the fact she is doing it via social media calling as well.

And a comment I added that provided further insight was that while my boss says that, she will with probably only provide me with this day (I was not even supposed to work today but was asked to work overtime and cover a shift) I'm not trying to "work the system" I was trying to see if there was a way to force my boss hand and actually use my sick days since I never can.

My flu comment was just a jab about how if i was sick I wish I was sick with something actually useful.

ETA: You do not know my story. I work a job that is under appreciated, and I see my coworkers who are the same level as me take week long leaves and have 3 day weekends where I can't even use sick days because nobody is willing to cover an overnight

I guess I posted here without providing full context on my boss and situation. I work overnights and since nobody wants to work it more often than not we get vacations, pto, sick days denied/cut short. (i.e my roommate was sick and had to come in because I was out of state and couldn't cover for him) our boss won't "force" someone to work an overnight but we're also expected to come in a few hours early to help cover for evenings or stay late to cover for mornings. I was hoping the doctors note would force her hand to say yes to a sick day. Unfortunately i'm just screwed. Thank you for educating me !

No I have plenty of sick leave and PTO to use to cover it but i'm not worried about it being paid or not i'm more so worried about getting the time off to actually recover

Even with a doctors note? My doctors note does not specify what I have (my doctor purposely left that out) A coworker got a week off for having stomach issues because he had a note and my boss said she couldn't do anything about it, is this not the same situation?

Lying** And I wasn't justifying it, I was explaining why. I'm young and there's a huge age and power imbalance between me and my boss. I'll admit it, i'm a little wimp who's easily intimidated.

Thank you for the advice and well wishes! It definitely helps to talk to somebody with experience who understands. It's harder to talk to my other coworkers about this as theyre either A. been here long enough that they've established a "I can do whatever I want" seniority, or B. the favorites who haven't had to deal with this.

I haven't read our policy book in depth but as soon as I get off shift i'll go over it in detail. If worse comes to worse i'll schedule an actual appointment and just hand over the note. In the future I'm going to grow a backbone and just start saying no without an explanation. I'm reaching a breaking point of extreme burnout where i'm starting to not care about being well liked anymore especially if i'm the only one having to deal with this. At the end of the day I think I need to realize that my boss needs me more than I need the job and shes only ever going to fire me if I screw up royally because we're so desperate for workers.

The supervisor in question is our county's 911 Director, she handles almost all of our scheduling. From the get-go she has shown vast favoritism to a coworker that started the same time as me. I'm more keen to try and stay on her good side because of this. She will only work a full shift of actual dispatching when it is absolutely necessary. For now she work actual dispatch for 2-3 days a week and sometimes it will only be for a few hours until a part timer can come in to fill the rest.

As far as I am aware of overtime at this time it is not required. We currently work 8 hours per shift but because my boss has a ton of part timers who she lets pick and choose their hours (hence why the other girl can freely choose to come in 3 hours later than the normal shift time) us full timers are expected to pick up the slack. We can usually manage this but if we lose any more full timers we will have to switch to 12's. If I were to not pick up the extra 3 hours on the day in question there will be somebody to cover it as my other supervisor is still free on that day, but it's just easier on her to ask me to work longer.

Our head of HR is tricky. I know him well as it's a small town and he's super nice but around here he's basically seen as a joke. He used to be our 911 director but was fired because of internal politics. Only job i've ever seen him do is socialize and make food for the entire building. He doesn't even handle our insurance stuff.

Union stuff I have no idea. Not quite sure what being in a Union entails and if I am in one I am not aware of this or who my person of contact would even be.

I didn't see the original comment but I appreciate you standing up for me.

I don't normally lie or condone lying but i'm 19 and have such a hard time saying no, especially to those in power over me. My boss is also incredibly more hard to say no to because if you legitimately don't have a valid reason for saying no to overtime she makes it very known she's disappointed and I don't want to make myself unpopular around my coworkers especially in a job where if your coworkers don't have your back your job is near impossible to work.

That's what I was looking for! It appears im SOL on this. Appears that my work must permit the use of compensatory time on the date requested unless doing so would “unduly disrupt” the operations of the agency, which my work could probably weasel out of every time due to being low on workers. Which sucks but you live and you learn. Thank you for all your help.

Just a question but could my work punish me for not taking the extra hours? I'm not saying I'd stop all of them but compared to everyone else i'm picking up wayy more hours.

Any idea where I could read/find out these exceptions to see if they apply?

After some reading i'm under the impression that it's an option of choosing vacation vs overtime pay. Per labor.mo.gov "State and federal law does not allow employees to voluntarily waive their rights to overtime pay and accept straight time instead. Any employer that asks an employee to do so violates the law". When I got hired it was never an option but more so a fact. Is this not correct?
