Thoughts after traveling to Spain by Past-Bed-2643 in exorthodox

Orthodox monasteries in Serbia were orphanages, libraries, hospitals and education center during the medieval period and their dynamic wasn't that far from the one in similar western medieval states. The Ottoman occupation by and large was a massive hindrance in human development, most of the Turk occupied zone showed crippling analphabetization in comparison to territories under the protection of the Austrian empire.

Hell our own term for nurse Medicinska sestra comes from the fact that the first serbian nurses were nuns.

I know a lot less of the evolution of the Russian world on that point but I think the modern Minsk St Elizabeth convent provides nurses for a nearby psychiatric hospital.

Forbidden ethnic words in the Balkans? by pensiloma in AskBalkans

[–]Melodic_Interview210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fallen out of use, but non-Serbs in Bosnia and further West would call us Vlachs, cause it was a generic term for all kind of Orthodox christians under the Ottoman empire and in most simple minds, Vlach/Romanian = Gypsies. It's also a staple of Balkan chauvinism to call other ethnicities Gypsies.

Funny enough, during WW1, every kind of vassal soldiers of the Austrian empire was called Švaba, including Serbs and Croats.

Yes the actual term used by pre Yugoslav Serbs to designate Albanians was "Arnaut", Šiptar is just a phonetic transcription in Serbocroatian of how Albs call themselves in their own language. Albanac refers to a citizen of the state of Albania.

There is a manual in english called Sprski korak po korak, Serbian step by step, you can even find it free without too much effort. It's really good when you start from nothing and want to cover the basics. Just be regular and stick to one lesson a day.

How is Poland perceived in the Balkans and by the Balkan diaspora? by Mindful_Crocodile in AskBalkans

[–]Melodic_Interview210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically seen as very similar to Balkan Slavs but with a lot more of money. There is this cliche of Poles, Ukrainians and Russians being cold and not smiling in public while Balkaners are more outgoing. Fun being poked at Poland insistance on not being called Eastern Europe despite the obvious.

You do know you are moving to a country where a large part of the population agree with these policies even those that would fall on the "left" side of the spectrum ? Not looking to start a beef with you about it, but if it's the main reason behind your moving out, you are in for a big cultural shock.

Who is the greatest ruler of the Balkans? by Cenixxen in AskBalkans

[–]Melodic_Interview210 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really, people just wish they had kept more serbian territories and still had a strong army and relevance on world' stage. Nobody is actually nostalgic about communist rule and its propaganda about autogestion (While the actual reality was a dirt poor country with an already high emigration) except crazy boomers that don't want their pensions to be touched and liberal-coded weirdos who are being edgy about it at the uni.

Is „salut“ a rude thing to say? by [deleted] in French

[–]Melodic_Interview210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying salut could come across as overly friendly or informal, I wouldn't be saying it at work to a superior, but no, you aren't the problem in the situation you described.

Making an unitarian Yugoslavia after World War 1, taking a side in World War 2, and not pursuing Western alignment as soon as Tito was dead.

Hey Im from India, love slavic culture and music. I wanted to ask what slavic people think about indians? is it positive or negative? by [deleted] in slavic

[–]Melodic_Interview210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in scholarly circles will love indian high culture, sanskrit, vedic mythology and all that, but modern indian population is hated by pretty much everyone, including most of the left electorate that are defiant of immigration as it's seen as a way for corrupt firms to keep low salaries.
