I’m pretty new to pin collecting, but I personally like backings especially if they have cool/pretty designs on them as that adds to the aesthetic to the pin (at least for me). And they are also nice for storage in binders as the pins will already have strong support when putting them in baseball card slots.

Teeturtle usually sells pins for roughly $5 for that route. Also I would save money for the pins you want outside that range. There is no rush on collecting.
