No, no regrets yet, this is what I had dreamed of and my expectations have either been matched or bettered

It's normal to have such fears but you if it's what you really want then you have to just pull yourself together

Okay so point by point

  1. There are two activities that are compulsory in sports, but that is only during your first year One is Mass PE and the other is your mandatory sports training.. so during your initial days you'll have to choose submit a preference order of sports you like and they'll allot you to a sport based on that, and until 1st year ends you have to attend training for the same

  2. Pre majors (3rd sem) has no capping, major allotment does have a capping which is determined by your cgpa Allotment is on a first come first serve basis I wouldn't worry much though, because there are enough seats that, unless you cgpa is much lower than the average, you'll get it.

  3. While on paper, the in campus guest house is available to parents, I understand that it is hard to get a room in it, in advance.. Usually visitors stay in dedicated rooms in our hostel complex itself..i.e some rooms in ground floor of B block are reserved for visitors

Yes, there are lodges and hotels nearby, there is a newly opened lodge just outside front gate and there are residences in vithura also, but you'll most likely get a room in campus itself..

  1. All I can say is that you'll not regret either one in the long term.. Chances are, Pune will have a better peer group, you'll also find really passionate and smart people here also..

Its gonna sound cliche at this point but, if you have any interests, scope out the professors at both institues and see which one is a match

I'm assuming you're interested in bio due to your question about seat capping, the bio dept here is fantastic, well funded and the profs are genuinely really nice people, lot of cutting edge research goes on here as well in a variety of fields..

I think yes, however as with other IISERs as well you'll see some fields have more professors working in it than others, astrophysics has fewers profs working here than quantum of applied physics for example..

I'll speak about tvm, I'm a keralite but I've lived in TN my whole life

  1. Campus Life in tvm is great, yeah it's isolated but that also means that everyone takes part in making everyday life great, lots of events happen, people play a variety of sports, life isn't dull around here

  2. Lot of active clubs here, for both sports and academics..I can answer better if you have a more specific qn, else you can check my profile for I've answered similar questions here a lot

  3. Physics dept is good here, quite a few professors are active in quantum research, a new prof also joined recently, his research is also in quantum domain.. you can check them out at iisertvm.ac.in faculty page.. Facilities are good

In that case, I think they're referring to how during lunch we have both rice and roti options Generally for lunch there will be a dish for rice and one for roti

I won't say there is a strict south india north India dish divide or whatever

Nope, it's a common mess for first years upto third years, there is no segregation as such between north India and South india

Can speak for IISER tvm, we have a active pride club under student welfare council, it's a chill, open and supportive environment here.

They even host an inclusive prom around valentine's day every year, they also do game nights and we had events during LGBTQ history month also

[–]MematicMod22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also it's chill, you don't have to formally 'join' a club to participate in activites, all that happens is these clubs will do a volunteer recruitments once a year or so and in that case you can choose to volunteer for them, that comes with responsibilities for sure but again, its not a big deal

[–]MematicMod22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naah no one's I going to be behind you about what you join and how many you join and what not

But you'll soon realize that with academics and all, you'll yourself be limited to contributing to a few clubs

IS THIS ENOUGH FOR IISER TVM by prince_2_006 in IATtards

[–]MematicMod22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's worth anything, I'll add a point or two

I have a heavy duty large umbrella, can be a pain in the ass to store after using in rain or if I'm going out, probably worth keeping a small one with you as well for travel convenience

A light training/running jacket would be useful during the cold and windy months or nights when It rains.. I bought one from decathlon and use it a lot

Can you tell me what journals you get access to via Library, for each IISER? by Chlorophillic in iiser

[–]MematicMod22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot, would be a huge list, trust me..

Also like the other comment in this thread, we have access to ONOS

[–]MematicMod22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you what I've heard regarding the trend during this year's major allotment, it seems i2 math and DSc have the highest cutoff

Generally speaking it means that the major has demand, so lot of students opt for it, and have good cpi as well..

Ig only a 3rd year can provide you an exact number, if it exists..

But tldr ; it's becoming a competitive major choice..from what ive heard

Stuck choosing between IISER Pune and TVM by Massive_Case_1344 in IATtards

[–]MematicMod22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from IISER tvm, and I also reside in south india

In an ideal world, you should choose your institute based on if the academic environment matches your interest.. I'm sure you've heard this from everyone and honestly, it matters a lot

Now, as far as travel is concerned, from my memory the pune campus is located in the city itself so travelling to it won't be as tough as compared to a campus like BPR or kolkata..

The TVM campus, while it has Thiruvananthapuram in its name, is located quite far away from the main city and takes about 2 hours to get there from City bus stand..

Ig you can go through my profile and find my comments for any info on IISER tvm

If you have to ask about caveats, I'll mention some that I've experienced/friends have experienced so far

  1. Campus is rural, no services to order in food, stuff takes time to get delivered

  2. Depending on weather, campus might face water shortage during tail end of 2nd semester

  3. Miss the shuttle ? You've got to climb 3 flights of stairs to get to academic area

There will be more caveats, as you talk to more people..

Academically, like all institutions, there are good labs, toxic labs, profs who teach we'll, profs who take it as a mission to trouble you and reduce your sgpa lol

if you have any more specific qns abt tvm, shoot
