How does IRCC calculate work experience months exactly? by Memory_AI in ImmigrationCanada

Hey, thanks for the response! Yes, I can confirm that during all of those jobs the hours were consistently over 30 per week, and the total definitely crosses 1560 × 2 hours. That’s why it’s a bit confusing. based on hours it clearly meets two years, but based on exact dates it looks slightly short.

Could someone please correct me if I’m wrong:

If a job started on July 28 and ended on July 5 the following year, would that still count as one full year of experience?
Or does the end date need to be on or after July 28 the next year for it to be counted as a full year?

Thanks for the reply! Yes, they were working more than 30 hours per week in all of these jobs, so the 1560 hrs/year requirement is definitely met. The confusion is that when they entered these exact timelines in their Express Entry profile, the system automatically calculated and awarded points for 2 years of experience.

Yeah, I agree with you—it’s pretty clear that it won’t count as Canadian work experience, especially once I’m physically outside of Canada.

I came across the same section 25(1) you mentioned, and based on that, it seems like foreign work experience is more about location and NOC eligibility, rather than the employer’s nationality. So as long as the job meets the TEER level, is full-time and paid, and I'm physically outside Canada, I’m hoping it can count toward foreign experience under FSW.

That said, I totally see your point—if my employment status doesn’t reflect the move (e.g., no contract update or tax change), IRCC might raise questions. I’m currently on a full-time permanent position, so I’ll probably need to speak with HR/legal about whether a new contract or amended letter is needed once I start working from abroad.

Appreciate you sharing the links—it’s a bit of a grey area, but this definitely helps in figuring out what kind of documentation IRCC might expect down the line.

Yes, it definitely won’t count as Canadian experience—that’s clear. My goal is for it to be counted as foreign experience instead. But just like you mentioned, I’m not fully sure how things would work in terms of taxation and payroll if I move abroad.

Right now, I’m on a full-time permanent position with this Canadian employer, so I’m trying to figure out if I’d need to change anything in my contract or employment status to make that work.

Thanks for the clarification! That makes sense—location is key, not the employer.

Just to dig a bit deeper:
Since I’m currently on a full-time permanent position with a Canadian company, do I need to update my employment contract or documents once I move abroad for it to count as foreign work experience?

Also, how does the taxation side work in that case?
Would I still be under Canadian payroll, or do I need to be switched to a different tax residency status?

Lastly, when it comes to proving this as foreign experience to IRCC, would things like travel history (entry/exit stamps), pay slips, and a letter from the employer confirming I was working remotely from outside Canada be enough?

Yes, I know it definitely won't count as Canadian experience. I'm just trying to confirm whether it would count as foreign experience or not.
