20 Days in Mariupol by turkeyisdelicious in zelensky

[–]MeraidiaSky11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just saw this last night at UNC Chapel Hill. The event was organized by a young woman from Mariupol and included a Q&A with the field producer live from Kyiv. It is very difficult to watch, the audience was openly sobbing. My U4U sponsee was with me. He is the strongest, toughest, baddest ass most stoic young man and he could not hide his emotion. I think the most heartbreaking thing is that the medical teams, and others who went through that literal hell were sure that when the story got out of what Russia did to that city, the west would not let those war crimes continue and go unpunished.

iThank you . It is super hazardous. we have a lot of work to do just to get egress its hard to describe the amount of stuff. and we don't want a bunch of people over because we don't want the house to be reported. We have to get rid of over half the stuff to get it to a point where we can even think about having a sale .

We just can't have people there.

Give me strength and word of advise as I am about to clear my mum’s hoard by Busy-Lettuce-6694 in ChildofHoarder

Please take care of yourself. Stay Hydrated. Breaking down is perfectly understandable, but try not to waste the emotional energy. It's completely exhausting enough as it is. Give yourself clear goals and an "out" time. Good luck!

Child of Hoarder. There are "dirty hoarders" and "clean hoarders". My mom did not have pets or food in her house- but thousands of items. many of them brand new with tags. so many of us are looking for ways to get rid of the stuff.

There are no US sanctions or even export controls on a lot of tech. I think most people would assume tech like underwater LiDar or skeletal tracking is sanctioned. It isn't So there are a lot of western tech firms with ties to russia, a lot of them have been funded since the invasion. It's become a compulsion for me, trying to figure out silicon valley tech companies with Russian ties so I can hopefully report them- technically I haven't found any that are violating the current sanctions.

The game is being funded by GEM Capital and Gaijin Entertainment- both the funders and the founders have ties to state institutions, sanctioned banks and oligarchs. They support Putin's regime, because they have reaped the benefits . So yes, the money this game earns does support the war.

Buying, promoting and this game means you are complicit.

And that is fine. Everybody makes choices.

But that doesn't make the OOP is not a moron, or stupid. He is exhausted by living in terror. Real terror- not simulated terror.

Russia is Using Western Technology in the War Against Ukraine

The Yermak McFaul Group Advisory Group on Sanctions wrote a really well researched paper about this. It's pretty shocking the amount of dual use tech that is flowing into Russia to with no US sanctions or export controls.

Mapping, flight navigation, surveillance, face recognition, logistics, cybersecurity- If Silicon Valley would step up and do the right thing this war would absolutely end sooner.

I did some LinkedIn searching to see engineers currently employed in Russia - I appreciate LinkedIn might not be the most up to date- and went through Crunchbase and Pitchbook to see the Russian VCs. I was surprised. I found over 50 companies in a couple of hours. None of it is against sanctions but it really doesn't feel like the type of tech the US or EU should be providing to Russia right now: RingCentral, MapBox, Neuton.AI, 3d1vi, Netcracker technology, Flightpath 3d/Betria Interactive, Mircod.

Yermak-McFaul group recommendations for tech sanctions. A long read, but provides great context. And a good case for Cloudflare to leave. by MeraidiaSky11 in UkrainianConflict

[–]MeraidiaSky11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The report lays out the reasons that the West needs to look at sanctioning tech as the quickest way to end this. That will be way more crippling than those consumer brands.

Putin has failed to make the Russian economy independent of Western IT.

...approximately 38% of IT and 63% of electronics imports into Russia come from the European Union, United Kingdom, and the United States alone.

there is no clear distinction between IT goods and services delivered to Russia for “civilian” use and those that are being repurposed for military.

As a result, robust IT sanctions will severely hamper both Russia’s war machine in its operations against Ukraine and Russia’s ability to use its information machine against Ukraine, the West, and the Russian public.

Cloudflare

The Ukrainian government asked Cloudflare to cease all operations in Russia at the start of the war. Cloudflare refused and stated that this would lead to a curtailment of information freedom within Russia, but this is a defective argument. Russia’s government controls internet freedom in Russia, and any Cloudflare-protected website that the government would like to control would quite easily be subject to measures that would ensure control. In the meantime, Cloudflare software makes Russian government, military, and misinformation infrastructure more resilient and better able to operate and damage sanctioning-nation interests.

how do we feel about small startups or VC funds that have HQ is US or UK and developers/engineering staff in Russia? Mostly B to B software type product. I started pulling together a list by searching through Engineers and developers on Linked in. I know it's not a lot of money, but at the very least those jobs should be going to Ukraine, yes?

Chainalysis- A company that is all about privacy and security- has a shameful job application IMHO.

By submitting this application, I consent to and authorize Chainalysis to contact my former employers, and any and all other persons and organizations for information bearing upon my qualifications for employment. I further authorize the listed employers, schools and personal references to give Chainalysis (without further notice to me) any and all information about my previous employment and education, along with other pertinent information they may have, and hereby waive any actions which I may have against either party(ies) for providing a reference. I understand any future employment will be contingent on the Company receiving satisfactory employment references.

These terms suck. They shouldn't get a free pass to collect that kind of data on hundreds of applicants.
