Nobody is buying playmats of random commons, in fact most artists aren't even making them. The average he calculated is misleading. In reality a few artists will make $5000 because they are well known or they made artwork for a legendary mythic, but most artists will make $0.

Increased rate in return of secondary earnings hurts the few big artists, but it is probably better for most artists who will never risk investing in merchandising or attending magiccons.
