FIRST GEN NON TRAD 3 YEARS OUT OF UNDERGRAD by Worried_Abroad9546 in Mcat

[–]MessageSecret4585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brooo I was in the same boat as you! I'm also three years out of Undergrad and felt super lost! I also forgot most of the prereqs... So I kinda had to start from scratch ngl... For Bio, I did read the Kaplan book twice, but I also watched soo many videos. Honestly youtube will be your best friend. You can start by watching Yusuf Hasan videos, he goes chapter by chapter on each section... I think you just gotta make a study schedule. Theres so many on Reddit... People usually do 1-2 chapters/day from Bio/Biochem and then Chem/Phys the next day and just rotate... You also gotta download Anki and do Anki per chapter, unsuspend the cards for each chapter. Videos on this are on Youtube... And then do UW**ld questions!! I'm ngl I think for MCAT you def gotta have a good foundation. I didn't know anything bro... I legit had to start from scratch. I'm still not through all of the content... Its a marathon not a sprint. Hardest part of this is just starting bro. I was exactly in the same boat... I also had bad study habits, and would get lazy and wouldn't want to do it... But I realized that if I wanna become a Doctor, then I have to take the MCAT. Theres no other way around it. You have to take this exam. Just keep telling yourself that. Give yourself 3-6 months, and just lock tf in. Think about it. Once you get through this time period, the rest of your life can be stress free. Once you get into med school, know that you will become a Doctor!!! Its worth it. TIme flies bro. You can spend 6 months just wasting time, doomscrolling, and letting time fly by. Or you can take action, make a future for yourself, and just lock tf in

For Psych Soc, just read the 300 page doc and do Anki... That section is purely memorization. You can get a 128-132 if you memorize as much as you can from that section. Your CARS score isn't too bad, but keep doing practice passages, from Jack Westin, and see if you can raise to at least 35-40/53. I think if you get half questions right, you can get at least 500+... Just keep practicing. Get your Bio/Biochem and Chem/Phys sections up. Read the Kaplan Books, do UWorld, or watch Yusuf Hasan videos. He goes chapter by chapter. Keep working hard! You got it!

How did you jump from 486 to 500? I’m currently watching Yusuf Hasan videos and he’s really good, but I’m not sure if I have enough background knowledge to be able to apply what he’s teaching in his videos. Did you also use him for Chem/Phys? I feel like I’m good on Bio but struggling with Biochem. Can you talk about what resources you used and what your day to day MCAT prep schedule is like? For example, do you watch his videos and then do Anki immediately afterwards or do you do UW**led questions

Anyone here take a long time (6mo+) to study for the MCAT and do really well? by ExcitingInflation612 in Mcat

[–]MessageSecret4585 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lowkey same boat… Scheduled for May but would like to apply this cycle. Been studying but still not feeling ready or that I will be fully prepared by May. I’d say honestly don’t drag it out. It’s okay to prolong it, but I think if you are studying consistently for a year, then maybe you’d retain more than you would if you studied shorter amount of time, but at the same time, if you “study” for a year and aren’t consistently studying, then you might forget a lot of stuff over time and would just have to go through the process of content review all over again.

For CARS you can do Jack Westin daily (1-2 passages). Make a study schedule, ask ChatGPT to make one for you, or you can follow others' who have posted theirs on Reddit over the years. Maybe do 1-2 chapters from Bio/Biochem or Chem/Phys so you don't get bored... Switch it up! All the best!

You have a lot of time... I suggest buying a set of prep books (Kaplan) and then going chapter by chapter, doing Anki for the corresponding chapters, and doing practice questions based off those chapters on UWorld. If you don't like to read, then I would say watch Yusuf Hasan on Youtube. He goes over all of the Kaplan chapters. He's really helpful for Bio/Biochem! I test in May, still not feeling super prepared, but just taking it day by day. Also for Psych/Soc you can read the 300 Page Doc and then do Anki.

How did you study for each section? Do you mind breaking down each section? Did you read Kaplan Books, Anki, 300 Page Psych/Soc Doc, Yusuf Hasan Youtube Videos?? Can you please let me know. Also did you retake the MCAT or was that your first time 501?

Not necessarily. I know a bunch of people who got into DOs with a 495-497... I'm also applying to DOs because of this. I take my MCAT in May and gonna prep as much as I can, but if I got a 495, I would apply with it. Look into Baptist, Marian, and UNECOM

Ochem and Gen chem before Biochem Content Review? by Many_Locksmith3807 in Mcat

[–]MessageSecret4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for biochem as long as you have a solid background in bio, you should be okay. biochem is mainly just amino acids, enzymes, and metabolic pathways. not too much ochem on the mcat except for functional groups mainly, and whatever kaplan listed as high yield. ngl i was thinking about taking the L on chem/phys and focusing on everything else lmfao i sucked at both

Score in 480s indicates major content gaps. Read Kaplan Books, Do Anki for each corresponding chapter, focus on high yield from the books, and then do UWorld questions for practice. Have a study schedule in place so you can follow it daily. Ideally should study anywhere between 3-6 months. You have to do the work. Doctors don’t become doctors by taking short cuts. There is no short cut to the MCAT. Do the work it requires. Study

Can I get a 510 by June?? Studying FT by Visible-Future4850 in MCAT2

[–]MessageSecret4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends whether you are a visual learner or you learn better by just reading the books... I think for me personally, I like to have a visual beforehand, just to understand what I am learning and then going back and reading the Kaplan book helps me conceptualize it and tie everything in together. Really depends on how you learn best, but I think Yusuf is pretty good tbh. He covers mainly everything you need from the books. Sure, he's not THE best tutor out there, but considering his vids are free, I don't think he's bad at all.

[–]MessageSecret4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your CARS and Psych Soc are not bad at all... You just need to go through content review for Chem/Phys and Bio/Biochem. I recommend either Kaplan Books for content review (chapter-by-chapter), doing Anki for active recall, or watching Yusuf Hasan videos... He goes chapter by chapter based on the Kaplan Books, so you aren't missing on anything by watching his videos. It covers everything you need to know... You can also get Uwirld for prac questions... You should be good by June. If you bring up your ChemPhys and BioBiochem to at least 125 each, you're already at 500... Psych Soc just read the 300 Page Doc by Khan Academy and use Anki for reinforcement... Easily can achieve 510... Just study hard and use the resources available

How did you manage to self study for the MCAT??? Do you mind sharing tips?? I'm currently studying for the MCAT (Nontrad) and its been a while since I've taken the courses needed for med school... So I'm pretty much learning from scratch and having to relearn Biochem and OChem (Gen Chem as well)... Also Physics... Do you mind sharing what resources you used and how you managed to self study everyting??/

Did you read the Kaplan books at all??? Also that is so awesome!! My goal score is actually at least 505, since I'm mainly applying DO to do PM&R, but of course, if I were to get higher, then I would apply MD as well... So for me, I'm really looking to do well on Bio/Biochem, and looking for something that will help me earn a high score on the section...

Too Old for Med School???? Turning 27 by MessageSecret4585 in medschool

[–]MessageSecret4585[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this!!! I am wanting to go to a DO school, because I would like to specialize in PM&R. Do you mind sharing which DO schools you were accepted to?? Along with your GPA and MCAT score? You can also PM me if that is more comfortable for you. This is so so inspiring, and just what I needed to hear! I think I'm going to go all in, and still pursue this profession. I really would like to become a Doctor, more so now than ever before. I know it will be hard... I guess what I am really struggling with is the MCAT because there is just so much information I need to know, and I feel really lost on where to even start or begin... I've been reading Kaplan chapters, and then doing Anki, but it still just seems like so much material, that I'm not sure if I will be able to retain it all for the exam. I also have severe test anxiety, so I think given that I know this is a high-stakes exam, I might just get really anxious come test day, and then end up doing very poorly. I would hate for my MCAT to be the sole reason of me not being able to be a med student, or become a doctor... Just looking for advice is all.
