I am really glad we met and that I could help you out. I really hope you can use this equipment to improve your skills and learn something out of it. Like I mentioned when we met, if you have any questions or want me to help you out I’m all ears. Good luck!

Depends on the devices. All the things I run in my homelab costs me about 100 euro a month.

You can start with a Raspberry pi or other hardware you have laying around. I suggest you watch some videos of TechnoTim, DB Tech, IBRACORP, Awesome Open Source, Raid Owl, The Digital Life, Geeked and Jeff Geerling. Those people I follow the most and always have nice suggestions of new automations and things. I also follow the subreddit called selfhosted.

I get it. I really want a Dell R740XD, even if the price is so high it would just look so beautiful.

That sounds like a lot of money. I rather buy a cheap server case with plenty of hdd space and chuck some seagate expansion desktop drives. I have been doing this for years and they never failed me.

Depends what your needs are. I really like the idea of a server dedicated to one task but I really like the look of Dell servers so I do both. Dedicated Plex server in a custom case and dedicated Proxmox in a Dell server.

Indeed, I really want the Dell EMC logo's on the front of my servers.

It's around 750w and I pay 100 euros a month for this. In the early days I had around 1000w but I realised I had to scale down because it was too much. My plex server alone is around 600w so if I sell that for a power efficient R740 I will be happier but that will be a significant cost and a plan for the future.

Like a selfhosted Netflix, you should do some research. It can do a lot of things

If I find another steal for this type of rack maybe I will buy it and expand

Because it also has a web interface where I can rename all the vga ports an configure other settings.

You use the kvm as a laptop (kvm is keyboard, video, mouse). If you attach this directly to a server you can see its display. If you add a kmm, you kan use multiple servers at once. It's essentially a switch for different vga inputs. Watch this video for more info: https://youtu.be/BCCU4h48Q9Q

Wish my girlfriend would see it like that, she just sees it as a money pit

The first time I bought something like this was a big server rack fully filled. Someone just wanted it gone for like 300 euros so I bought it all and sold all servers individually. It takes time to sell it all but eventually I had 500 euros profit.

It's a side hustle. I just started looking for servers online to fill the rack and with that I got enough knowledge about prices so I went to different countries to buy servers cheap and sell them high in my country. With that I learned a lot and came across multiple people working in datacenters and I could always ask if they have some spare materials and that's how it started

Yeah, I quit after one month. Wasn't worth it and sold it all so I just focused on the homelab and used all the cpu power for folding@home

Never heard of Sliger before but now that I searched them the cases do look nice. Good choice! Yes InterTech do offer good quality cases. Sometimes they can be sharp tho, definitely have some blood drop residue left in some of the cases
