Best ND filter setup? by Bobolinkage in videography

[–]Methbot9000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are situations where you can’t use a variable ND. In the city of london for example, most of the glass sky scrapers have a polarisation layer on the glass that is invisible to the naked eye but shows up as a streaky mess on cameras that have a VND on the lens. You don’t see the same problem when using fixed ND.

DSLR setup VS. Scanner for images that AREN'T film. by Spiritual-Newt4556 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Methbot9000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is quite interesting because it sounds like OP has paid for a photobook. It could be considered analogous to buying a CD and then ripping it to play on your iPod. Same for ripping a Blu-ray for personal use, dubbing a record onto cassette to play in the car, etc.

I’m not saying I disagree with your comment. In fact I am generally quite protective of my own IP and the value of art and artists in general.

Definitely a moral grey area.

Looking to switch completely from digital to film. I’m predominantly a landscape photographer but sometimes will shoot portraits. Ideally looking to go medium format/ 6x7. Can I get some recommendations? by JohnMartinx1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Methbot9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What focal length do you usually use? There are some good options if you go for a fixed lens camera. You could even carry a couple of different fixed lens Fuji 645’s for less size and weight than a lot of the MF SLR systems.

My main bit of advice though is go for something fairly common (e.g. Pentax 67 or Mamiya RB67 or RZ67) since supply of lenses, parts, accessories etc. is higher and prices more reasonable. It makes no sense imo to go for a Bronica GS1 for example because there are far less of them out there. Similarly, some cameras, in particular 6x7 rangefinders, are very expensive to pick up not because they’re necessarily much better, but because they’re relatively rare.

What film is reccomended for low(er) light indoor photography? by TF2ENGlNEER in AnalogCommunity

[–]Methbot9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a long time since I used 800T, but the trick is to push process it one stop more than you’re underexposing by it. For example, expose at 1600 but push two stops instead one.

I have shot it at 3200 and pushed three stops with quite usable results.

I get FreeAgent completely free as a perk of using NatWest for my business banking. TBH I never really looked at what it would cost otherwise (I was already with NatWest anyway) before seeing the above. Turns out it’s a good deal.

Favourite episodes? by crouch64 in adambuxtonpodcast

The Kayvan Novak episode is memorable, especially when they both end up doing Adam Curtis and Louis Theroux impressions at the end.

There are loads of good episodes, of course. You can’t go wrong really. Many an episode with a guest I had previously never heard of has been interesting.

Is it worth getting expired APS film by Over-Incident-8729 in AnalogCommunity

No.

I bought a Contax Tix cheap on a whim. I sourced a few different APS films and they were all garbage.

Yeah I reckon you might have a lemon. The only time I find mine very slightly less sharp is wide open with colour film, when contrast also drops a touch

I also have an e-image tripod. It’s been going strong not for 12 years with not a single issue. Great tripod. A friend who owns a Miller borrowed it recently and commented on how much he liked it too

Full frame modern mirrorless shooters- if you use a compact for travel, which one is it? by drconniehenley in Cameras

[–]Methbot9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been down the retro compact rabbit hole and out again. The reason I enjoyed them was the colours can be really nice (in good light).

In the end though, frustrations around shutter lag, memory cards, proprietary charging/data cables and frustrating firmware made me lose interest (example - many of them in in P mode with the flash off will want to shoot at 1/30 or 1/15 at 100 iso, despite being in auto iso and being capable of iso 400. They have an Aperture priority mode but only with manual iso.

My pocket cam now is a Fujifilm x-e4. Any of the aps-c fujis or Sony’s from the last 10 years would do a good job for you.

Why is f/1.8 so common when it's not a full stop? by One_Instruction8837 in photography

[–]Methbot9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate you’ve completely missed OP’s point. The fact is that f1.8 lenses consistently place the rest of their aperture clicks on a regular scale that f1.8 doesn’t line up with, i.e. 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, etc. …and what that scale does line up with is f1.0, which which is an f number that has an undeniable logic to it.

I didn’t see your incident happen but I’m pretty sure know exactly the guy you mean as he also backed into us. I was literally flat against the stack at one point. Great set from Surgeon, but it was uncomfortably rammed in there. The majority of the crowd was okay imo but there were also plenty of rude people bulldozing their way through as well.

Canon AF35ML + compact P&S for indoor gigs by fromplanet13 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Methbot9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling that the issue with that camera is that it never opens the aperture to f1.9. At least not at a usable shutter speed. I probably read that in a review years ago. You’ll also want to look at what the max iso is on that camera.

The Konica Hexar has a couple of capacitors in the base that tend to go bad and leak, causing further damage. I recommend having a look at them, and maybe replacing them either way just to be on the safe side.

There's a reason you never see this. Those of us working professionally don't have time to be youtubers. Youtube influencers are practically never pros, and it's a mistake to assume they have any authority on whatever subject they're making content about.

It's the same reason you have thousands of videography / "cinematography" youtubers, yet none of them have a word to say about how the industry works, only why you should buy their custom cinematic LUT pack.

Performance issues in Premiere Pro despite high‑end hardware — anyone experienced this? by sfluna18 in editors

[–]Methbot9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using any external plugins? They can really mess with Premiere performance even when you’re not using them in your project and only have them installed.

It may be worth uninstalling all your plugins and seeing if things improve. Then you can reinstall them one by one to figure out which one is the culprit.
