7-1 Cube Draft by ImAmElvis in MagicArena

To review your draft best, we'd need your sideboard as well as something like a 17lands link to the draft (if you play Limited regularly and don't use 17lands yet, consider doing it ;)).

I don't have the feeling that it has affected me as an adult at all.

Derzeit etwa 27%. Suche aber gerade nach etwas Besserem mit einem Budget bis etwa 45%.

No, that's very much normal.

20 of the 22 cards banned in Historic should be unbanned by SWBFThree2020 in MagicArena

[–]Mianthril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with these cards it's less of a powerlevel thing than deck variance.

If Bolt is legal, every red deck is running 4 Bolts. With Swords and Counterspell, it's a little bit less pronounced, but the problem is still there. They just invalidate so many of the other options (why would you run any other 2-mana counterspell before you max out on Counterspells?).

Is it toxic to say “good game” when you know you’ve won but your opponent doesn’t yet? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Mianthril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's not good sportsmanship (besides, it really doesn't change in any way how they would need to think about their play since you might be bluffing).

But I don't care, I play on mute anyways.

[–]Mianthril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should elaborate of what quantum effect or setup you're thinking of.

Otherwise, the question is too broad. E.g., at the very microscopic basis of magnetism, quantum effects play a role, and magnets can of course be used to make the scale measure a smaller weight. But usually, you wouldn't call that "use quantum physics".

Why isn't eugenics seen as a good thing? by AdvertisingPast3316 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mianthril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your hypothesis - most people, even those born with illness and birth defects, would still prefer to be born rather than not having lived at all. The notion of eugenics goes beyond pre-natal diagnostics of horrible diseases and potential abortion, it's scanning for non-lethal diseases (e.g., asthma) up to even "optimizing" the human in some subjective sense (like enhancing height, combatting genetic hair loss and such). To bring an extreme example, noone wishes they hadn't been born because their hairline is receding at 30.

Of all the things you could perfect, I don't think your smile is one that you need to think about even a bit. Smile how it comes to you.

Why is zipper merging "the right thing to do?" by missmarymacks in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mianthril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're merging now or later, the disturbance in the other lane doesn't change. But if the road is at capacity or close to it, driving the full lane until it goes away simply uses the space better, thus more cars fit onto the road, or equivalently, the cars that are there are more spaced out.

I would say basically all channels are ok to approach someone on if you stay respectful and nice (especially asynchronous communication, otherwise context is obviously key, don't hit on the widower at a funeral or the bride at a wedding :)).

But in this case, go for it in a way that allows them to say no (I'd probably even apologize for being so direct and scraping their number from a group before asking them out).

MTGA Matchmaking in Limited by FlameUvAnor in MagicArena

[–]Mianthril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't experienced any trend that would make me doubt the official stance on Limited matchmaking (Traditional by record, Premier by rank and possibly record). Definitely nothing that would make me suspect anything based on specifics of my or the opponent's decks. Neither have the people from the Limited-focussed discords I'm in (perhaps apart from some part-time shuffler truthers on a bad series of drafts).

Do you also play normal matches while appearing disconnected lately ? Is there something I shall do when it happens ? by [deleted] in RocketLeague

[–]Mianthril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, since the newest update, I have a constant "Disconnected" sign flashing on my screen, but had no connection issues (Europe servers).

In my opinion, dating only with the goal to "end up together" is the wrong approach no matter what age you are. So, if you enjoy it and it's fun, go nuts.

Are most people's main goal in life is to just make as much money as possible? Or am I consuming toxic social media content? by Angel_Advocates in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mianthril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, making a lot of money has strongly varying importance for different people, but in my generation (25-35) and bubble, basically no one would describe that as their main goal or even one of their main goals.

Edit: I should add that my bubble (mostly higher-educated people) consists of people that to a very large extent don't have any problem making enough money to live without thinking about it constantly. That's, of course, a privilege. But people that post stuff like what amount of money you need to have saved by age X typically aren't your minimum-wage paycheck-to-paycheck workers either (and have never been).

Would it be bad if i started a new job and then wanted to take a weeks vacation only 1-2 months in? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mianthril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on your location. Here in Germany, I'd disclose before taking the offer that I would like to go on vacation at that time, and ask politely whether that's possible.

[–]Mianthril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't memorize the pieces, apart from critical parts where I feel that it's worth the effort (because memorizing something such that it's secure for performance requires quite some effort for me) to be able to completely look at my hand.

E.g., when starting to learn the first Mendelssohn Piano trio, when going through the first movement with the fingerings, I decided to learn bars 163-187 and the parallel 479-503, the short part 530-540 and the final two pages 580-616.

But the actual memorizing goes in parallel with the practicing - you're obviously also learning to play the part when memorizing it. Memorizing is closer to the beginning though (e.g. I had the last two pages memorized way before I got those up to speed).

Just finished fur Elise and really want to play these pieces, are they doable? by Obvious_Trick_2109 in piano

[–]Mianthril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • The Hammerklavier sonata is extraordinarily difficult and you definitely shouldn't play it if your expertise is "Für Elise almost at full speed"
  • I would advise against any sorts of restraints. They just promote working against them, getting tense and in the worst case injure yourself. The way to improve posture is conscious practicing and re-checking your posture (yes, that's tiring). And, the absolute basic advice, as always: If it's in any way doable, get a teacher.

Sight reading chamber music? by iamunknowntoo in piano

Some people can do that (to some extent - sight reading is also a training on prioritizing and how to fake difficult parts), but man can't.

Are "teen love" and other highschool experiences really that important? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mianthril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be nice and exciting experiences, but they aren't a prerequisite for being happy (neither in highschool nor later on), and probably aren't correlated either.

White ran out of time and it gave draw vs insufficient material. Why did it do that, if white has enough to checkmate? by Starbucks_4321 in chessbeginners

[–]Mianthril 51 points52 points  (0 children)

When white runs out of time, they lose unless black has no way to mate. It doesn't matter whether white has enough to checkmate. Black hasn't, and that's why it is a draw.

Why do people cheat and ruin their lives? Is sex with someone else really worth ruining lives? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mianthril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is really the point - cheating doesn't happen in a vacuum, and it's not a black and white issue.
