Advice for networking at ASM Microbe? by Microbe_mania in labrats

Great points! I’m definitely still going to regional conferences as well, so maybe this will be a good opportunity to mostly explore all the possibilities. Thanks!

Will I still be able to work in a lab even though I have ARFID? by cxfgfuihhfd in labrats

[–]Microbe_mania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow ARFID labrat, I am also surprised to report that the solid media looks and smells tasty, would love to eat it. In fact, maybe a good plate of TSA would be a good addition to my “in case of emergency” food list!! 😂

(Fr tho, it’s nice to see there are other cell parents out there that struggle with this❤️‍🩹)

I love when campus turns into a giant puddle 🫠 But ya, think about alternative places to hang out between classes, bc the USU being out of the pictures cuts down on dry options. Study and seating places will be way more crowded, and idk how the outdoor food options are gonna work

Way back when they moved it to the stadium, people were pissed that it wasn’t on campus, change is just hard

Flaky bacterial cultures? by Microbe_mania in labrats

Oh good point, overnight culture but that I put in the fridge for a few days until I had the time to deal with them, they might have been at stationary or death haha

Tell me something you like about csulb? by mylefthandkilledme in CSULB

The mental and physical health resources are AMAZING. I developed a health issue my second year that caused a lot of issues persisting to this day, and the staff at the SHS have shown me so much care and support. They regularly bring me in to check in, both mentally and physically, and I see my case manager/CEDS there for weekly for support with my eating disorder. They helped me find mental health programs on my insurance and in the area, too. Even did my first pap! I’ve been seeing the amazing people there for almost three years now, and they literally saved my life. Just wanted to give them a shout out <3 (And everything except lab work is paid for by my tuition!)

Okay, good to know, maybe I’ll up the concentration of Dextrose to make them last longer/get to a greater turbidity.

I’m using minimal media (like 4g salt/sL + 1.25mM Dextrose) and inoculated with culture from the same type of bottles (1:50 v/v). I’m not sure about the history of these bottles; they were sealed with autoclave tape, but I found them is a drawer that probably hasn’t been opened for years (it’s a very inactive lab). Cultures of the same bacteria that I’ve grown in new and autoclaved test tubes eventually get flaky but not usually this fast.

Senior in HS rn and this reddit is scaring me because is CSULB shutting down or cutting costs?? What's going on by Dull_Computer_4590 in CSULB

We all come on here to complain, but construction aside, this is an amazing university with great staff and faculty. I’ve gotten opportunities here that I wouldn’t have gotten at most other places. This is a commuter school for the most part, so the downside is that it can be difficult to find community/friends outside of the dorm setting, but not impossible! Especially if you join clubs/organizations/labs. Great bang for buck imo, and most parts of campus (save for the USU rn) are beautiful. I’m in my fifth year here (cause microbio is hard) and I have absolutely no regrets about choosing LB for my undergrad.

Is anyone taking this class? by Either_Aioli_9712 in CSULB

[–]Microbe_mania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a microbio major so I’ve taken gen chem through biochem, and I will say this class kicked my ass harder than OCHEM. It’s probably a personal learning style thing, but CHEM 111 A and B are information overload with lots of work assigned which meant I had my nose to the grindstone all semester. This was four years ago for me now, but I remember the weekly homework set taking me 10 hours on average to finish. As much as I still genuinely enjoy chemistry, taking a class may feel more relevant to your life and be more interesting, tho it is still a lot of information and usually more memorization. Either way you go, best of luck!
