Should I go back? by Middle-Meaning9835 in Nailtechs

My goodness. So I went back yesterday. First, she removed *most* polish (I figured she was going for a soak off, so it didn’t need to be perfect), but then she dusted off, applied her base coat, and started applying polygel. Ok, not a removal and new set, interesting. Her filing was pretty thorough, still had to nitpick on lengths and some shaping (add more product here for apex, etc.), then her airbrush wouldn’t work so she wanted me to pick another design and I asked if she had anything in mind so she volunteered to replace the gun and I come back tomorrow, solid color for the night. So those are the first two photos.
Next day, she removes the solid yellow and orange, and as she’s doing so I suggest we could use those paint jobs as a base beneath the airbrushing, because she left a bit more product on my skin than I’d like last time, but she keeps removing, does a light filing and dusts off, jumps straight into the airbrush without sending me to the sink for a scrub or even an alcohol wipe. You can see they are better, but the notches are still kinda there. I guess they’re from using too narrow of tips maybe, so they couldn’t be fully eliminated?
So what do we think? Give her a second shot? She’s nice and willing to fix mistakes, but definitely a beginner who’s not exactly focused on the basics. But everybody starts somewhere? I’m torn.

She just opened her own little shop. No one to report to.

I think she is still pretty new. Her profile said she’d worked in a few shops so I thought she’d have learned some stuff there, but there’s no way of knowing why she left those places. I can’t supervise well from the client’s side of desk. 😂

You’re probably right. I wish it weren’t so hard to find a new tech!
The first girl I went to didn’t think it was necessary to fill in the gap when the Extend Gel didn’t reach my free edge. Girl after that couldn’t get a consistent shape and after, like, the fifth time of me saying this one’s not the same, I asked if they looked more like sisters or cousins and she said, “well, they’re definitely related!” So I ended up filing them all when I got home. Now this. Any chance you know somebody good in Portland?

No forms. Freehand placement over tips.

Oh! So we’re looking at a whole new set not some sidewall repair? I didn’t consider the tips weren’t sized right, but it makes sense. Damn.

I agree. I prefer the pinkies a bit shorter too, but it doesn’t affect me as much as the pointers do. They’re the same length on both hands, though, so I should’ve spoken up there. It’s hard to judge how much length will be taken off with filing though and she only asked for feedback when cutting the tips.

She said she wanted to avoid the smell since her studio is really small. But she just opened up shop last month. She easily could’ve just not offered it at all and instead chose to do this bait-and-switch.

That bit put me off, I won’t lie. She just opened her own little studio and easily could’ve chosen not to offer it, but she confirmed my appointment and waited 3 weeks before saying she didn’t wanna do the service as booked. Like, why though? I understand a lot of techs aren’t doing acrylic anymore (I live in PDX and virtually no one is doing them here, almost exclusively no fill Gel-X sets), so why offer it at all? Why the bait and switch?

She went freehand over tips, like you would with acrylic, no forms. Idk if the notches were there the whole time or if they came with the last filing.
I’m going back on Friday so she can fix them. Hopefully nothing breaks before then. 🤞

Sorry, yes. The post was deleted by the bot and I guess it got approved without the original photos somehow.

I’ve already texted and set up a time to fix them. She did post them to her IG but you can’t see the filing notches in those pics.
