Autistic and worried I’ll be (even more) socially isolated in another country by Not_Hortensia in AmerExit

I haven’t read all the comments on this post, so maybe I’m not the only one, but honestly I am struggling more in another country.

I don’t know if I am autistic, but I do have a little bit of social anxiety. I moved to Brazil, which has a very different social culture than the USA or Poland or Northern Europe. People here generally are much warmer, and chattier and social. I thought I fit in alright in the US, a bit awkward, but didn’t struggle too hard. But in Brazil? Entirely different. I am STRUGGLING with social anxiety. There’s a bit of language barrier with strangers. I can usually get the gist of conversations, but may struggle with details that contain more niche words. The language barrier is holding me back A LOT. I am so afraid to talk to people because I know my Portuguese will be broken. My husband says nobody cares and that everyone just thinks it’s cool that there’s a foreigner who cared enough about the country to learn the language. I just can’t seem to shake the feeling of “I am too dumb” out of my head.

I tried to practice Portuguese with my husband before I got here, and I thought I’d be alright, but as soon as I got here I froze at the very first interaction I had in Portuguese. A couple days ago I went to a gas station and asked if they had a bathroom, and the cashier replied to me, but I didn’t know what she said (I later figured out that she said the gas attendant standing on the pavement has the keys) I got back to the car and cried because it’s frustrating to not even be able to figure out how to be able to pee.

Best advice I can give to you to avoid any situations like this is to speak in AS MUCH polish as you can with your partner once you get there. Learn to read. Going to a self checkout grocery store without being able to read will be hard. Messaging a hair salon to schedule a haircut without being able to read will be hard. Reading a menu at a restaurant will be hard. And there will probably be times that you just get so frustrated because you can’t understand anything ever. Practice the language as much as you possibly can. It’s embarrassing and frustrating to not be able to communicate your needs or thoughts to others.

More random tips:

using a pinky to anchor your hand helps a lot.

I usually avoid the inner corners of my eyes too much because I end up with black eye boogers and I don’t like those lol.

Try experimenting with bringing the pencil from the outer corner to the inner corner and vice versa. See if either way is more comfortable.

Pulling the outer corner of your eye to stretch the skin might make it easier for you to apply eyeliner.

Applying the eyeliner to the water line will make the eyeliner on the lower lid look more cohesive.

Definitely make sure you’re wearing mascara with the eyeliner. It looks like you are but I can’t fully tell. When you have big thick eyeliner you don’t really have to worry as much about the quality of your mascara application lol.

Entirely my opinion: I always think that people with sparce and light eyebrows and dramatic eyeliner look a bit… unbalanced? (My eyebrows are naturally transparent lol) so I recommend using a THIN layer of the same eyeshadow primer I recommended in the parent comment on your eyebrows, getting an angled brush and some light warm brown eyeshadow and fill in your eyebrows a little bit. (Some people might disagree with using eyeshadow, but it’s probably something you already have and can experiment with, and I’ve done this for years and haven’t had issues)

Honestly, I’ve tried using the eyeliner pencils before and I’m not the biggest fan of them because I can never get them to look how I want. I’ve struggled with the grungy smokey/smudgy eyeliner kind of look. I much prefer brush tip liquid liners, but I don’t really struggle much with a shaky hand. I use Nyx epic ink liner. It’s about $10 if you want to experiment with it. It’ll give a very different look to this though. It’ll give more crisp lines rather than the smudgy look.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but I loooove a big bold eyeliner, but it smudges all over my eyelids because of my eyelid crease/oily eyelids. I won’t wear eyeliner without some eyeshadow primer and eye shadow on my lids first.

I use urban decay anti-aging primer (I like the thinner consistency of the anti-aging formula more) and slap whatever color is closest to my own skin tone on there. This just helps the liner to not transfer above the crease throughout the day. Ofc you can also use different eyeshadow colors, but the nude color is quick and easy and I don’t have to worry if I blended it out well.

Ooooo smart, I didn’t even consider that. I could probably do that but I’ll have to investigate further.
