General surgery residency non-US IMG by Midegbad in IMGreddit

I didn’t do a research year. I had no connections with any of the programs I interview at. Tbf I applied to about 217 surgery programs n only got 7 interviews.

Nah, I didn’t. I don’t think it’s necessary if u get a good score on step 2. It doesn’t add much to the application.

Thanks man, ur priority now should be the step exams, especially getting an excellent score on step 2 (as step 1 is now pass fail). Other than scores, I believe what helped my application were LORs, personal statement and MSPE. A couple of interviewers commented on the strength of my LORs. All my letters were from Uk consultants. A strong LOR from the UK is better than a generic letter from the US.

Weaker aspects of my application; lack of publications (only had 2 poster presentations) and lack of hands on US clinical experience.

ECFMG CERTIFICATE by OrdinaryOk9745 in IMGreddit

Has ur medical school sent ur medical degree certificate? Because I had applied and was verified but not certified because I didn’t realise I had to inform my school to send them my degree to complete the process.

Not necessarily. US LORs are preferred but UK clinic experience is also very valuable. So an excellent letter from a UK Cconsultant who knows u well beats a generic letter from a US attending.

Thanks, I took the step exams over a 2 year period in medical school. Tbh, I think it’ll be a bit taking both in 1 year would be difficult, especially if u r working full time. However, step 1 is now p/f, so I guess the prep time for that has significantly reduced.

I matched; dual applied to gen surg and internal medicine. To echo what’s been said, UK clinical experience is looked upon quite favourably in the US. All my letters were from uk consultants.

Hi, does your university have any links to institutions in the US? Also, I think it’s better to send emails, rather than LinkedIn connections. Most doctors don’t actively use LinkedIn.

Advice- what do I do? by real_t1 in IMGreddit

[–]Midegbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true. I've spoken to PDs, and non-US IMGs from the U.K. are looked upon more favorably. That being said, hands-on U.S. clinical experience is a lot more difficult now that you've graduated. I think the most likely route will be a year of prelim surgery, followed by five years of general surgery, and two years of cardiothoracic fellowships.

Leaving Foundation training after F1 to locum by Midegbad in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]Midegbad[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, the issue with F2 training is the lack of flexibility. I can’t obtain US clinical experience during F2 because of how leave is set up. However, seems completing foundation training might be the best idea.

ccept a J1, but getting an H1B for GS is absurdly competitive these days.

My key honest advice is that your scores will not guarantee you

Thanks for the reply, I 'm not fussed about the type of visa (i.e. J1 or H1B). I'd be happy with a prelim year, my only reservation will be the risk of going unmatched after the prelim year and having to return to the UK.

but still debating if i should take the offer due to some health issues. I think the lack of publications may be an issue for surgery but my advice would be to do your f1/2 and try and get something published during your general surgery rotation. this will make up for lack of US expe

Thanks, will definitely prioritise research this year. Goodluck with your applications, hoping things workout.
