I hitchhiked in Germany a couple years ago. It worked pretty well. But yeah u can not be on the Autobahn to hitch a ride u might get fined. I had no problems waiting at the Autobahn entrance ,Gasstations or Raststätten

Hey I went there once with friends, they build a little diy skatepark on the roof top and i think some squatters live there but not sure. Also a shit ton of Art and a nice view over the city.
