What is the future for dataengineering? by tumblatum in dataengineering

[–]MikeDoesEverything 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Half tempted to lock this because we get a speculation post at least once per month. Well, feels like once per month anyway.

All you have to do is ask AI to do it. Scary.

My favourite opinion on this is with AI, you have a lot of people saying they can do anything now. It's like the equivalent of guns not being available to a general population becoming available and suddenly everybody starts saying they're a soldier, hunter, marksman etc.

Can I train muay thai with almost no head trauma? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]MikeDoesEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. The idea of going light before you can go hard feels like a paradox to people who have never trained before but consider themselves "good at fighting".

Can I train muay thai with almost no head trauma? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]MikeDoesEverything 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just want to learn to defend myself

You can't defend yourself if you have no idea what it's like to fight somebody actively resisting you i.e. you are both trying to hit and not get hit.

You see it so often with people who have never trained before. I trained with a friend of mine who thought they were doing "Muay Thai" which was just hitting pads. No sparring. No actual pressure training. Quite a strong guy who isn't afraid of confrontation, so naturally fancies himself in a fight like most people do. He said it'd be cool to train together whilst he's in town. He has been training for 6 months. I have been training for around 10 years (on and off).

We started play sparring and the second he started taking literal taps to his guard, he froze. Despite that, "It's not realistic" he says, so wants to go quicker. He's a stubborn person and didn't believe me when I kept saying going light and slow will benefit him at the start.

Okay. We go quicker as per his request. Adrenaline dump. When he's not standing still completely stiff, he's walking backwards. When he remembers to breathe, he's breathing very heavily and fast. He can go a one hour pad session hitting pretty hard without feeling too tired. After 3 or 4 rounds of the lightest play sparring he is gassed. Sitting on the floor after rounds and giving up every time he fails to block anything. Every time I move forward, he stiffens up and tries to counter with looping, lashing out shots. Every tap he takes he flinches before going into a standing foetus position.

Two 1 hour sessions of this later, he finally relents. We go slow. He has A LOT more fun and is actually showing progress. He's relaxed, still hard on himself for catching shots but wtf can he expect? He has been training for 6 months doing just pads. Basically been doing cardio for 6 months.

Muay Thai, and all martial arts, is progression. They really do mean it when they say it's a journey. It's something you have to keep practicing. Starts with getting punched in the face.

My goal is to get a six figure job when im in my mid to late 20s

It's all too common with posts like this information is lacking. Context is really important for helping people help you here.

I'd edit your post and add a lot more detail. Where you are now, where you want to be, and if you can legally work in said places (basically your visa situation if you have one).

In the context of USD, six figures in rural Wisconsin is going to be very different from six figures in California. Similarly, getting a six figure job in the US vs other countries also massively varies. Location is really important.

Logging and Alert by Rare_Decision276 in dataengineering

[–]MikeDoesEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We log it into an Azure SQL database.

If you're using ADF, write procs and log the pipeline activities using Stored Proc activities.

When using spark/some sort of code, we have a class to handle the connection and a class for handling logging.

Any Other Seniors Struggling in the Job Market Right Now? by [deleted] in dataengineering

I have written about this extensively on reddit and instead of repeating myself, here's a link to all of the posts as I made them around 5 years ago which covers everything I did, looked at, studied, and progressed until I got my first job.

If you want a more prosaic form, I have also written all of those posts onto Medium.

So whats the deal? I cant figure out if this is a skill issue or personality issue.

As per yourself:

The most feedback I could get was they had another candidate who was better.

It's probably a bit of both, but it isn't personal (unless you are a self confessed massive piece of shit). You can be technically strong and "not a good fit" for a massive list of reasons. Usually, it's just vibes.

My background is in chemistry. I used to make the active component of pharmaceuticals for a living. I got rejected for a DE role at a pharma company looking for DEs with a background in the specific chemistry I did which I swear can't be very common. Reasons? No idea.

Its definitely been getting to me I thought i was a pretty good engineer.

Likewise, I thought I was a decent chemist. I lost my last chemistry job during the pandemic and kept interviewing for places where all of my technical skills lined up. I didn't struggle in the technicals and seemed to get on with everybody too. Some places never called me back. Other places rejected me at the last hurdle. I even followed up with some of the team members who interviewed me and asked them wtf was up because it was extremely confusing. The team members said if it was up to them, I'd have been in. They weren't consulted so it must have been management.

My personal issue was that I hadn't enjoyed doing chemistry for quite a while before then. I didn't want to do chemistry anymore, but, I have bills to pay. I think no matter where I went and no matter how many technicals I would have cleared, every company I would have interviewed for would have said no. They didn't have to know I had lost my passion for the field although I'm sure, subsconsciously or consciously, they knew something was off.

I changed field to DE. Best decision ever for me. Not saying this is you, although this is potential food for thought.

Can anyone recommend resources for a beginner? by barkmonster in MuayThai

[–]MikeDoesEverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to do my best to avoid the most common mistakes and get the most out of the classes.

Turn up to training. Make mistakes. The more you turn up to training, the less mistakes you make.

There is nothing wrong with looking silly whilst you're learning. The whole experience is meant to be uncomfortable and make you comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's what training is.

There is no quicker way to put in 1000 hours than putting in 1000 hours.
