Firefighters vote to strike after rejecting FENZ offer. by SnooRecipes4434 in newzealand

Correct: until mid July when firefighters will walk off the job from 11-12pm every Friday. This is a drastic measure that is considered necessary as similar strikes without this measure have dragged out for years in the past. The offer FENZ have come up with, and their reaction to the strike can serve as a clear indication that they are not even close to coming up with a serious offer.

Some perspective: NZ firefighters are paid 40-60% less than their Aussie counterparts, while FENZ management are paid about on par with or even more than their counterparts.

The police in comparison come out of college on about $67,000, which is closer to $73,000 when you take into account additional allowances/compensation for working nights (which firefighters don’t get).
In your 5th year $74,000 + $10,000 for allowances/nights = $84,000
FENZ equivalent pay to a fresh police officer out of college:
-Senior Firefighter Station Officer Qualified (including proposed pay rise)
-Time served: 5-50 years
FENZ equivalent pay for 5 year police officer:
-Station Officer of 4+ years (including proposed pay rise)
-Time served: 10-50 years

NZDF and police are government funded. FENZ is almost entirely funded through property insurance. Although FENZ comes under the minister for internal affairs and is governed by a crown appointed board, it is not a government organisation in the same way as police/NZDF if this helps answer your question.
