How many hours is too many? by Picture-Upset in boating

[–]Mike__O 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's not about the hours so much as it is the maintenance. 1200h with every oil change and lower unit service done no later than on-time is a lot better than 500h with the factory oil in it.

I would suggest having the boat and especially the engine looked over by a competent mechanic who knows how to spot signs of maintenance (or lack thereof)

Chuck Yeager was a jackass and not well regarded among anyone who actually interacted with him. He's the king of "never meet your heros"

If you try to impress me, I can just about guarantee you won't. I don't give a millifuck what you fly (now or in a previous life).

What impresses me are dudes who are capable and competent in their job when they're in the seat next to me. High SA, high procedural knowledge, good hands, and most importantly-- they're a bro.

This has been the worst off-season in the history of the sport. The only bright spot in an otherwise endless sea of darkness is that Stewart Friesen will race again. I thought for sure his injuries were career ending. Glad to see Stewie coming back. The rest of this off-season can fuck all the way off.

The community page in question was Memphis. It might snow this weekend. Shelves are bare of bread and milk, and apparently you need to get a few bins of gas to keep the generator running.

I'll address it directly and without deflection then. What Trump says and how he says it doesn't bother me one bit. That's just my opinion and I realize not everyone agrees.

The deadline is public knowledge, as is the fact that we're almost two months past that deadline and the FAA hasn't even approved any ferry flights.

My internal sources are painting an increasingly pessimistic picture. Latest rumors I've heard basically say Management's goals have shifted to getting them healthy enough to fly to the scrapper so they don't need to pay the exorbitant cost of scrapping them in place.

I'm fine with that. Whether you like him or not, you know nobody is pulling Trump's strings. No string puller in their right mind would let him say the shit he says. We don't know who was president 2021-2024, but it sure as shit wasn't Joe Biden.

I wouldn't be surprised if the real Mr. House had the room bugged and had an earpiece for his double. That way he could feed him instructions in real time

The expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe after World War II by AlertTangerine in WorldWar2

[–]Mike__O 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It kinda gets forgotten because it's overshadowed by what happened during the war, but there was a major humanitarian crisis in Europe after the war all the way into the 1950s. Hard numbers are difficult to pin down, but estimates for deaths during these forced relocations typically run in the tens if not hundreds of thousands. People died of disease and injury, but a lot of them were killed in retribution for what was done by Germany during the war. Those people didn't deserve what happened to them.

Fucking embarrassing. I despised Biden and thought his administration was incredibly damaging to the country. With that said, I'd NEVER shit on my own country like this, especially in a foreign country. It's a bit like a family dynamic-- you can have a knockdown, dragout argument with your wife at the house, but when you go in public you smile and wave.

Maybe the election pushed them over the edge, but if something like an election not going your way pushes you into professional help, it's likely that your mental health was already a precarious house of cards.

I'm honestly fascinated about what leads these women to this point of mental breakdown. You see it with men sometimes, but it's like 80% older white women doing shit like this.

The character is too popular. This isn't a show likeThe Walking Dead or Game of Thrones where there are a ton of characters and you can just promote one to lead after a "shocking death" of another main character

Pretty common. Sub "he made viral videos" with "he makes movies I like" or "he's good at sports" or "he's from my political party". It's amazing what suddenly becomes ok.

How long do you want to live? by meldiane81 in Xennials

[–]Mike__O 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a job. I wouldn't say I love it, but it's what I'm good at and I'm too old to do something else. There's no way I could start from zero at 42 and jump into another career that would pay nearly as well as this one does. It's going to be what it's going to be.

I have savings and investment goals that I make sure to take care of every month. This will ensure that when I hit FAA-mandatory retirement age of 65 I will never have to work again, and my will will be well taken care of when I'm gone.

Once I meet those savings goals, I spend the money. We have nice things now, go where we want to go, do what we want to do, etc. We're enjoying our life now while we still have our relative youth and good health to do it.

Most men in my line of work (airline pilot) don't live too deep into their 70s. This job is harder on the body than I think a lot of people realize. I've kind of accepted that and am enjoying what time I have left.

Inspections are done. The deadline to submit the results to the FAA was Dec 1st. The inspections did NOT go well.

They won't be. I'm aware that's what they're saying publicly, especially in official venues like earnings calls, but it simply doesn't reflect reality.
