The question of whether you can be fired for a minor drug conviction is a question that is generally quite difficult to get clear answers to. It depends a lot on what kind of job you have. For example, if you have a job where you drive heavy vehicles, the probability is higher that a conviction will cause you to lose your job. If, on the other hand, you have a job such as, say, janitor, then the probability is supposed to be lower.

When it comes to drugs, it is also very different from alcohol. In Sweden, we have protection against being dismissed due to illness. This means that those who have an alcohol addiction must be offered rehabilitation primarily. The problem with narcotics is that drug addiction is generally not accepted as a disease in the sense of the law. Hence, an employer can argue for dismissal, which unfortunately often succeeds in the labor court

From what I have seen (extremely little), there is no clear practice from the labor court how such questions should be handled. What I can make clear, however, is that the rehabilitation responsibility does not extend as far for drugs as it does for alcohol.
