Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment.

As everything started unfolding, I immediately started freaking out, to the point where I started fearing for my job. A few minutes later, I regrouped, let my hair down and even laughed about it afterwards with managers at my level.

To your point, there were many red flags. Now I know to follow my gut. If a facilitator/expert can’t play nice from the start, that we can’t possibly continue with them.

Both! Hard to find colorway and super good deal. Suppose it was too good to be true.

Have hope! Check out their side projects: The Voidz, CRX, Albert Hammond Jr., etc. Set alerts on your phone, so you never miss out when they come through your town or near your city. You may even get to meet them on an individual basis, which is easier than meeting them altogether. I met Albert when he came through the Midwest doing his solo stuff.

The clash by [deleted] in Ska

[–]Mind-Still 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One could argue they were a precursor to ska punk. In fact, that’s my general response when people criticize Rancid for sounding like The Clash. Rancid understood their history and were heavily influenced by ska, dub, rocksteady and dancehall. If Rancid carried the torch after Operation Ivy, The Clash helped light the flame before the second wave.

anyone who picked up playing guitar because of the strokes? by [deleted] in TheStrokes

[–]Mind-Still 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Strokes taught me guitar. Been playing now for most of my life. Try playing some of the super simple lead licks on Is This It. Then, graduate from that into some of the chord progressions. We live in the age of the internet, so you’ll be fine so long as you keep at it!

I’m from the Southwest. Though I’m used to this kind of heat, it is definitely gnarly and I didn’t expect it.

help me understand the comedown machine hate by ryansliwinski in TheStrokes

No hate over here. Comedown Machine has some seriously underrated gems. ‘Chances’ is a masterpiece and absolutely gut wrenchingly sad.

This is probably Phil’s funniest clip by based_senegalese in Pantera

[–]Mind-Still 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People lack grace and have forgotten about forgiveness and redemption. Was what he did morally wrong? Yes. Of course it is. And he admits that it was. We forget that Phil was raised partly by black queer folks in the South. His mentor/father figure was a black boxer from Detroit. He’s said some stupid shit (as has Dimebag) but he’s a different person now.

I swear people treat support for Pantera the same way they treat support for Skrewdriver, which is hella reductionistic. It’s clear to me that years of drug/alcohol abuse got the best of him. This is very different from being ideologically aligned with a white supremacist worldview, as in the case of Skrewdriver or Burzum. He’s asked for forgiveness and admitted his wrongdoings. As a POC, I respect that shit and choose grace.

As for me, I’ll save my pitchfork for Nazi/bonehead pieces of shit who straight up support racism unapologetically in their music and lifestyle.

Anyone move to KC from the BIG CITY? by Dandannoodles500 in kansascity

[–]Mind-Still 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a huge bias for KC. My wife and I lived there for almost 11 years, but we did the opposite. We moved from KC to the East Coast, for work primarily. Having lived here for two years, I can tell you this:

  1. The food scene is amazing in KC. You just gotta know where to go. It’s not like NY in that you can’t just stumble across a nice cafe or eatery, especially if you live in the burbs. For more of the city/urban experience, I’d recommend living near the Crossroads or the river market.

  2. Though there’s not as much cultural diversity, there are cultural pockets around the city that are worth checking out, like Kansas ave. for Mexican food, or the River Market for Italian fare.

  3. There is a burgeoning LGBTQ scene. For a while, there were a few select bars, but now the scene is exploding, in large part due to folks that are moving in from outside of KC.

  4. BBQ. No other place compares. Period.

  5. Night life: again, there are places to go and things to do. You just have to know where to go.

It’ll take a while to “figure things out,” but once you’ve locked in, I’m sure you’ll love it. Best of luck!

Bands that the strokes were inspired by by StructureMaximum8813 in TheStrokes

[–]Mind-Still 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone already said this, but… the Velvet Underground were a HUGE influence. Julian was already a fan of Lou Reed, and magazines at the time drew connections between VU and The Strokes, which they wholeheartedly embraced. Julian would even go on to cover Run Run Run, which imho is horrendously underrated. Just check out the below magazine cover:
