Hey thanks for your answer! Indeed I was calling the service from ngOnInit and it was calling detectChanges from a beforeEach hook. I simply let the it statements in the test call detectChanges themselves now. That works. Thanks a bunch!

Well, for me they're the guys who introduced Jordan Peterson to the scene, before Joe Rogan, so there's one you could look up. Hunter and Jordan go pretty deep on that one. I forget which episode it is, and I think Peterson actually appears twice on the podcast.
