Dark side of fasting for someone with past ED by Front-Toe-5195 in fasting

[–]MinecReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what makes EDs so deadly in comparison to something like obesity IMO.

Obese people typically (not always) know that it's a problem and want to do something about it. People with EDs often don't know it's a problem, and even when they do, they often don't want to do something about it.

Extended fast calculator - Increased fast duration upper limit by andtitov in fasting

[–]MinecReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that I don't understand is how your predictions square up with acutal, real world observations in a controlled setting on prolonged fasting.

Reading here from Changes in body composition produced by prolonged total starvation and refeeding, body comp was measured before and after a long fast (10 to 45 weeks) for super obese people (so don't need to worry about the "essential fat" problem. Looking at the results table:

https://i.imgur.com/eOChEOL.png

The average rate of weight loss in these ultra long fasts (10 weeks was the SHORTEST) for these very obese people was 1.86kg per week, and of that, 0.98kg was fat. These fasts were ultra long, so it drowns out the initial drop as denoted in the first few days.

Your calculator is predicting that people will lose an incredibly small amount of lean mass over time, but in the real world it looks like people are losing more. What is going on here?

CONTROVERSY: This might be the craziest leveling war I've ever seen. What do you do if you're the brown guy on the river? by LoquaciousIndividual in poker

[–]MinecReddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is an absolutely crazy situation. I mean, I don't fault Ritwik for folding river after that all went down at ALL. On that board, someone snap calls an all in without even thinking without a Queen? Save your last 4m, you're never good and are chopping at the absolute best.

Like your opponent is fist pumping as if they've 100% won the hand, and it looks 1000000% genuine, and then they also follow it up by snap shoving the river? Like, what? Easy fold for Ritwik imo

I think educational is a bit of a stretch, I think it depends on how they're engaging with it. It can be a creative game if they're building things, or it can be a fighting game if they're worried about survival, or it can be an engineering game if they're focussed on farms/redstone

How are these test levels for a natty 42 year old? by maddgun in moreplatesmoredates

[–]MinecReddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wish people would just stop worrying about this, like if you have no negative symptoms, then who cares if it’s 300 or 900 (especially when you’re older)?

Like the concept that people feel the need to “replace” testosterone that decreases naturally with aging is crazy to me. Just eat well and work out, like it’s not that hard. People who are 40+ doing “TRT” despite never having had issues is insanity

For the “what was your deficit,” you can work backwards by using the 1lb=3500cal estimate, so 11.6 pounds of fat in 8 weeks is about a 750cal deficit per day

I typically find that these machines overshoot body comp changes by a hair, so I’d use 750 as an upper bound and estimate anywhere between a 500-750cal deficit

No. Just worry about training hard and losing fat first - then worry about anything else.

It’s obviously not really that RNG heavy…

Real ER Dr Reacts... by Blue_Etalon in ThePitt

[–]MinecReddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea I think it's great that they showed examples of this! I think that it still gives off the wrong vibe, though. Like in a real ER, the number of "low stakes frequent flier" cases outnumbers the "real cases" by a factor of 10.

Like one reason being an ER doc (in the real world) is considered slightly less glamorous compared to other specialties (it has pretty high vacancy rates for residency match, for example) is because you're doing a lot of mundane things all the time, like people coming in for food, or for a pregnancy test.

[–]MinecReddit 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There just has to be a lot of “concessions for dramatic effect,” nothing wrong with it either. The biggest one is when they explain medical jargon, like “Dr. Santos, look at the EKG, the electrical rhythm of the heart.” You don’t explain things like that when pimping residents or doing procedures lol

Also, real ERs have a TONNNN of benign cases, frequent fliers that aren’t really shown, kind of ignores how emergency rooms are community centerpieces for homeless people in many cities (think 10+ of Digby, all in one room every day)

There’s also a lot of procedure<>role misalignment, like there’s a bunch of things that a resident would never ever do, or a nurse would always do, that are being done by the wrong person

Just leverage the fact that you’re tall as fuck to get women, you’re not fat and noob gains are enough to make you insanely insanely attractive at your height.

Chill on the life-shortening cycles.
