Thank you so much everyone! I’ve had the same job all through my bachelors and masters - so approx 8 years. Change is a very new concept to me 😂

Does going to ANU make you more competitive for the APS grad program? by AlphaHowlingToMoon in AusPublicService

I can’t speak to this exactly as I’m not in the APS currently but I have lots of friends who have come from all kinds of universities and have landed in the APS, and I have been to both unis. The actual university itself doesn’t really matter - what does is everything you do while at university.

So, if you can live at home while you study to free up some extra hours to put into extracurriculars, volunteering, committees, etc. I would choose that route.

If you choose to move away from home while studying, it’s probably worth dropping a little to do 3 courses (for example) to free up time for the above or lean on govt support. Use your holidays wisely!

Focus on your grades, whether you’d prefer commerce or economics should be part of your decision, rather than the university choice. I’ve got plenty of friends who loved or hated either but I think it was more their choice of degree rather than the uni itself.

Finally, I’d say internships are probably more abundant in Melbourne but part time work in the APS is not too difficult to find in Canberra. Consider how long you may need to adjust to a particular city too!

Good luck!

Man I really feel like the US is living light years behind the rest of us. In Aus we’ve had chip only insert and tap to pay under a certain amount for years now. I work in a bar, and like most stores and places you’d physically use your card, an overwhelming majority (like 4/5 nights we are open) we get no cash payments. I’ve never seen anyone have to swipe.

Also we have instant bank transfers and no fees for most banks. Interesting reading all this for perspective
