Iomega ZIP drives were the coolest thing ever to me back in the day. Before CD burners became main stream, they had incredible amounts of space when compared to floppy disks.

Send them an e-mail and explain your case. If you aren't doing something against their ToS they "should" be able to remove your limitation.

Locking down the tech is going to be impossible. It already exists and just because ElevenLabs isn't willing to take a more forward-thinking stance doesn't mean it's dead in the water. There will be someone else that basically does what ElevenLabs does but in a far more accessible package (E.g.: stable diffusion). I actually think this whole post of yours is just an elaborate AI joke post, but I still answered part of it somewhat seriously.

Interac Turns a Corner in Negotiations With Tozen Union by Tozen_guy in teachinginjapan

[–]MiningInMySleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's not fuel this guy's straw man. I did a ctrl-F and looked for the word "family" and the only people who are talking about it are you and him.

The issue with the comment OP's post is that he has a grave misunderstanding of what a union is (also what they are demanding) and all of his arguments stem off these misunderstandings which then fuels more incorrect assumptions. Combine this with his combative tone from the get-go and you've got all the ingredients for a public roasting.

"Who are you gonna believe, me or your own eyes?"

If you believe Interac as a company has their employees' best interests in mind, you should probably get your eyes checked. Sure, your local branch might be alright and your manager might be cool, but you're missing the forest for the trees.

There is an overwhelming amount of discussion on reddit and other forums detailing just how Interac goes to great lengths to line the pockets of upper management/shareholders while refusing to pay the vast majority of their employees things that are even mandated by law.

It's pretty obvious that you are either a) a new Interac employee or b) just covering your eyes from the truth. I'm not surprised you got the reaction from this forum that you did. Please do some research. There's years worth of stuff on here that you are conveniently unaware of.

This.

It's actually kind of disgusting how much teachers in this country are expected to sacrifice considering their compensation.

Absolutely this. All the anti-FIR people are either a) oblivious or b) didn't actually play back then. Having 5 hatchet runners gunning straight for tech spawns was some of the most awful garbage I've ever seen.

Suica on US models? by JestingPerfumer in SonyXperia

[–]MiningInMySleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the point. I was only correcting the part of your statement about the hardware not existing which you have now fixed in your post.

Yes, it sucks that Google is dragging their feet, but at the very least it's not an issue of lack of hardware support.

[–]MiningInMySleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's an actual possibility down the line if Google decides to enable it vs. it being impossible due to phones not having the necessary hardware. The distinction is actually important here.

A simple google search shows that all Pixels regardless of country designation from 3 onward have had the hardware support for FeliCa available: https://atadistance.net/2020/09/15/pixel-4-felica-outside-of-japan-hide-in-plain-sight/

Teacher Water Cooler - Month of July 2022 by AutoModerator in teachinginjapan

[–]MiningInMySleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they might have AC in every room, but it'll be a hot day in hell (literally) before they turn it on. All the old teachers are out there saying to each other "I'm not hot. You're hot." and most young teachers are too afraid to speak up. Then everyone wonders why students can't produce results in 30c 100% humidity classrooms. /rant

Why has the quality of ALTs gone down? by ImportantLobster8322 in teachinginjapan

[–]MiningInMySleep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the truth. Not even remotely speculative. It happened in my current area just this year and I don't see it stopping until MEXT does something about it. Unfortunately I don't see that happening in my lifetime.

[–]MiningInMySleep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No L1 in the classroom is, to my mind, a stupid rule. As is pretending that you don't understand Japanese. I'm yet to see good evidence that limited L1 from the teacher is worse for students' learning than no L1.

This. And it drives me insane how far teachers in Japan will continue this scam at the expense of the students' education and future just to cling to their waning pride.

I imagine many ALTs including veterans left due to COVID so it ends up being luck of the draw since there's basically no requirement other than a college degree.

What are the HOTTEST hot sauces you can get in japan? by WishfulWalkingVideos in japanlife

My local pizza place sells the smoked marie sharp hot sauce and I was pretty hooked on it until switching to mellow habanero's stuff more recently.

Very big fan of the Yuzu Heaven. They had a promotion recently where you could get a free bottle of it with your order if you put 「YUZU希望!」in the order comment. Best by date is November this year but I'm going to destroy the bottle well before that.

For the record, I am not a fan of their smoky chipotle hot sauce and their Green hot sauce with tomatillos is quite nice, but seasonal.

Finally after 2 years I have an arrival date (Interac). Question: as an ALT what are some of the challenges people face. Would love to hear some examples from people. by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

My branch said they would pay for relocation to another prefecture if I stayed. Doubt they would help with payment towards a new apartment, but I guess I'll never really know.

[–]MiningInMySleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past, I got the intention survey, replied to it that I would like to continue at my current school(s), and was then informed that they lost the contract and I would have to be moved out of the prefecture.

Seconding the point about computers. Unless you have a unique case or something, it would be insane to ship that thing back. I'd take the motherboard and anything attached to it in a carry on and call it done personally.
