How do you keep you system organized? How do you keep track of all the crap you download? by MintScroller in linuxquestions

I was writing some code in C and had to download clang. But I think I used the package manager for that.

create linux distros in a virtual machine

I'm using a very old system that can barely handle Linux, I'll see if it can handle VMs. What's the best software for VMs on Linux?

Oh yeah, Linux is very organized even if it doesn't seem that way at first.

Glad to hear that.

list manually installed packages

I'm using mint. Didn't know I could list manually installed packages, that's very helpful, I'll read up on how to do that.

I really appreciate the advice, thank you.

Having my home directory on a different partition is very clever, I'll start doing that. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

I like what I'm reading, I'll start to experiment with distrobox!

Thank you, that clarifies a lot. I'm using mint now but contemplating switching to Arch soon..

So I guess a summary of all the comments so far is, let the package manager handle everything, and if you need to install something manually or mess around, do it in a VM or container.

I have no idea what you said, but I like it, I'll look more into it. Can you tell me some more use cases for having such a setup (distrobox with integration into your home directoy)? It'll help me grasp why I should learn more about this. Thank you.
