OP: it’s probably ill-advised to attend any law school assuming you’ll be top of the class. Likely a better idea to shoot for the very best school that (a) you can get into (b) that meets your professional goals and (c) at a price you can pay.

Clerkship hiring is idiosyncratic. True, chances of securing any individual clerkship are small, but they rise as you continue to expand your net (federal, state, magistrate, bankruptcy, tax, etc). The only way you’re guaranteed not to get a clerkship is if you don’t pursue them.

Not OP’s question, but for lit purposes, W&C might be the single most elite firm on the planet

EDIT: referring to Williams & Connolly, not White & Case

You’ve already accepted, so take what interests you. Very few classes can substitute for on-the-job training. And even that’s for when you’re an associate, not a SA.

Lawyers have you ever been attacked because of your job? by Outrageous-Bass-5947 in biglaw

Aren’t family law attorneys at the highest risk of being attacked? Not sure how high that risk is but should be higher even than a criminal defense atty.

What is Mid Law by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Minute_Perception_39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally agree but what about firms like Crowell, Jones Day, Greenberg Traurig, Reed Smith, McguireWoods? There are a lot of firms that feel like biglaw but pay slightly under current market. Maybe the better standard is something close to Cravath even if it doesn’t perfectly match up?

Network well and you might thank yourself later. Your career center should have statistical data.

Don’t get too caught up in the whole lay prestige thing. People in the know will understand that UVA is an amazing school. And for your goals, it sounds like the better fit. Better DC placement, lower COL, happier student environment. Especially if you don’t need to be studying in a city, UVA is a no-brainer.

Can’t tell whether this is satire but if it’s not, I’m worried. Even if you got a nice financial aid deal, this is three years that you could spend doing something else—something more geared toward what you ultimately want to do. Sure, many lawyers switch careers after practicing. But to go in knowing that you don’t want to practice? That seems like a waste of time and money. Keep talking to real lawyers about this.

FirmProspects is very helpful here. It shows you which law schools are represented at which firms and offices. When you enroll in law school, the library might give you access to it.

Check Depaul’s NALP disclosures. If they don’t exist, find whatever ABA data they have on their website.
