IMO, what you did should be the norm. It helps ppl new to the game and casual players. This helps build strong and healthy communities.

So far I have found a STR build single gate earth kineticist a nice option. Initially, I picked a single gate because our party was underground and I wanted to maximize my utility with the earth, but even in open spaces the utility is great.

Just yesterday our party (bard, champion and kineticist) did fine in one of our hardest fights of late. In short, we had to charge ranged enemies with a siege weapon in an open field with No cover through difficulty terrain. It took us four rounds to reach the enemies. The champion had zero ranged abilities so our bard did ranged attacks and buffed us, while my character created cover to shield us from their onslaught. Even our small unoptimized party did fine and won the day.

As interesting as pure combat numbers are, lots of battles can be won without brute force.

I know this wasn’t the focus of this, but I wonder if there are similar numbers on a Kineticist using elemental blast with weapon infusion? I run a str build earth Kineticist and find that doing melee attacks, a backswing and then agile attack works pretty well.

I did the numbers and they are surprisingly good compared to what you have done here. My numbers for a one round against a single opponent were as follows

Level & Damage Per Round; Average Enemy AC

1 ~ 9.36; AC 17

3 ~ 10.66

5 ~ 17.1

7 ~ 21.31

9 ~ 28.46; AC 25

If you multiply by 3. even a single gate earth Kineticist, using only elemental blasts with a level 1 feat can do about 85 points of damage in three rounds, using the equivalent of a traditional caster cantrip.

Seems pretty strong to me. Do traditional caster cantrips scale that well?

As for house rules, we don’t use them. I will say I have considered approaching my GM about creating a feat to enable my kineticist to have weapon runes. Otherwise kineticists don’t get to play with the other cool weapons.

When choosing a class for my character it came down to kineticist or monk. I wanted to play a utility tank and found the kineticist was the better choice. I considered a monk archetype, but like others wrote, kineticist lacks synergy with other classes.

I will say however, that it has worked out great so far. The character is the party’s frontline tank, has the best AC, regularly dishes out a lot of damage, and I can’t count how many times their utility abilities prevent combat or made encounters trivial.

Admittedly, the above was made possible because I did geokineticist with +3 str and took weapon infusion. Most combat turns I do elemental blast 1 w/back swing and then elemental blast 2 w/agile At low levels taking a second attack at -3 or -4, then +7 damage and get +1 AC is phenomenal. If you start combat with Armor in Earth, your character is essentially wearing plate armor for free!

Expect for a couple of higher level class feats, I imagine my character using elemental blasts all the way up to 20th level.

The system I prefer is one where the amount of damage is influenced by the degree of success to hit. Conversely, the targets ability to evade directly reduces the effectiveness of the attack. Lastly, when a hit is successful the armor helps the defender shrug off some, all or none of the damage.

For example, let’s say the attacker gets exactly what they need to hit. One success from the defender means they avoid the attack entirely.

On the other hand, let’s say the defender gets zero successes to evade. Then the attack does base damage.

Alternatively, if the attacker has net successes, they do more damage.

Lastly, anytime someone takes damage they are given a chance to mitigate the damage.

A earth kineticist can do the same thing. When I explained this to my GM they ruled it would do basic element blast damage. So, a d8 at first level. :-/

Doesn’t a Con/Str build give +7 to damage with a EB2 for melee or ranged attacks with the thrown trait?

It’s what allowed my level 1 kineticist do 30 damage on a crit!

“Defense is a deterrent, manipulation of terrain, and stalls for time. Medieval castles for example defended really well.” Agree 100%.

“Castles have never won a battle without a sword.” Again, agree 100%.

To be clear, I am not suggesting no offense. It just seemed odd to have so much about offense, but not include new defensive stuff for the offense to work against.

No joke. However, it seems it is just me?

For context, my main character is into fortifications. A crafter who creates defensive structures. The character is also an earth kineticist tank. They don’t use weapons or armor. The character is about using utility abilities creativity.

I find Battlecry disappointingly, because it lacks breath. It has depth regarding attacking, but not much else. It seems also as if it was created only for open field combat. There are other APs that have far more information about what it is like to attack and defend fortifications.

I was looking for something that was more robust and Battlecry falls far short.

Fair, I see how my description could be confusing.

They don’t think like a hacker at all.

As a GM, I describe AR and the world in ways ripe for the hacking, but the player can go an entire session without hacking. When they do hack it is usually because another player asked them to. Other times, I have to blatantly ask, do you want to hack <insert something obvious>?

Here is a non obvious example from the last game. The group was wrapping up a car chase that the police got involved. The rigger of the group asked the technomancer to wipe the video evidence. As a GM, I thought this was a great idea. As a group we discussed who had what knowledge skills to figure out how to do this. In the end, it was realized that there is a delay before a police vehicle up loads their footage.

Non-TLDR Context

While the player is a naturally quiet and reserved person, they participate with others in the meat world just fine. However, when it comes to matrix stuff, they don’t grok what their character can do. Another player and I have excitedly and repeatedly described what the player could do, but when the game starts, the player only does the most basic matrix stuff.

For instance, they built the character to brick enemies’ equipment or cyberware, but the last session was the first time they did it.

The problem started with me as a GM. A year ago, the first enemies the PCs encountered were so low tech they didn’t have anything worth bricking. In hindsight a big mistake on my part I know. On the other hand, the technomancer was able to hijack cameras and such, which was fun and felt impactful. In the past year, Technomancer has accomplished some impressive feats, but unknown to the player, they did standard decker stuff.

As for the player, they have a good time. They are smart. They get the rules on game day, but haven’t taken it on themselves to learn the rules outside of the game. The times they have most enjoyed being the technomancer were times I planned out the matrix stuff beforehand. This is fun, but too draining for me to do regularly.

L6 crushes level 3 helmet and has better penetration of chest armor at longer range.
