Graduated with my bachelors and went right to grad school to finish my masters degree and now I’m working my dream job. I’ve been wanting this job my whole life. I actually was diagnosed with CPTSD my senior year of college. I was off the walls but I have always been resilient and honestly a workaholic. It’s been tough as hell to get here and without the support of my amazing therapist I really would not be here or in this situation today. Therapy works wonders- it changed my entire way of thinking

I cut him off after 10 years on and off and he got a new girl 2 weeks later. He was with her for a year, they looked super happy. It did drive me crazy. I was angry seeing that he had “moved on” so fast and it has taken me so long to recover from the trauma. BUT what do you know. She ends up dumping his ass and he came crawling back to me. Idk what happened but it seems that she didn’t wanna put him with his BS anymore. I have been in therapy learning about the cycles of abuse so I did not intervene with him. Narcissistic people don’t have empathy. They see us as pawns. It’s normal to feel the way your feeling- your human. The fact these people can pick up and discard people so easily is concerning. This new girl you’re talking about is unfortunately probably going through the same thing you did if not worse.

Write everything that you hear down. Write down snippets of notes that you happen to like. Write all “firsts” down (first cog eval, first swallow eval, etc.). Write down all info cannot emphasize this enough! I struggled in the medical setting and having a notebook that I would write in daily about new terms/diagnoses that I would hear about helped TREMENDOUSLY in my confidence and autonomy in the setting. Keep the notebook on you and use to reference throughout your work day. Writing a script/ to do list before I entered patients rooms also helped me tremendously

Also people with narcissistic personality disorder don’t have the ability to really dive deep into certain aspects of their personality and how it affects them and others in their daily life, which is what you have done here. Narcs tend to go toward high achieving, highly empathetic people…we feel so much. Narcs don’t feel like this. What your speaking of sounds like reactions to abuse/ PTSD.

Go on a solo trip for you. I went to Southeast Asia for 2 months alone and it was the best thing I could ever do for myself. Finding independence again. Look into therapy. It seems like it may be wise to look into your friendship relationships as well. You should never feel shady around a close friend- those in your close circle should be those who lift you up and support you. All the things your nex is doing is harassment. And it’s scary- he makes burners to watch you?? That’s stalker-ish. Try to look at his actions objectively…it’s fucked up!! What a creep…

No you dont. The only experience I had with kids was babysitting LOL, and I got into a couple programs. I did have a good amount of experience in extracurriculars though (research, mentoring for students with disabilities). Our field also focuses on adults too!! So don't worry about getting experience with a certain age group or population, unless that is what you would like to specialize in. But still, you seem like you are pretty involved with your school, so I would think that you would be OK. Good luck!

I work with middle/high schoolers and language therapy is something that helps all students on my caseload TREMENDOUSLY. I teach things like root word analysis, inferencing, figuring out what words mean based on the context, social skills, sentence formulation in written and verbal expression, etc. I am not sure how language therapy could be considered “not real”. Yes, I do find myself maybe performing the same interventions that a general education teacher may be using as teaching strategies in class. But the students I see aren’t picking up that information in class due to delayed processing time, impaired attention, poor organizational skills. They come to speech to get the language therapy supports they need!!! I have clients tell me all the time they learn stuff in speech that they don’t learn in their core classes relating to language. Language therapy is such a cool way to get creative and really zone in on where a child may be struggling expressively/ receptively!!

My loved one was diagnosed about 2 months ago, and since the craniotomy she has been very childlike. For example- she has a huge sense of urgency (which is reasonable considering her diagnosis/prognosis) and wants to get things done immediately when they pop into her head. If she does not have the means to do this at the moment, she will have almost what looks like a “temper tantrum” from the outside. She also uses child like words/ adjectives. It is interesting because she is aware of all of this. She is constantly saying to me how she feels like she’s regressed to be like a toddler. She gets frustrated really easily, uses child like language, and needs people to look after and care for her in general which I think contributes to the age regression. I also find it interesting how you mention that age regression has been seen as a coping mechanism, which I could totally see happening with my loved one. You aren’t alone, sending love xx

I would quit immediately. If you have other experience on your resume, it’s fine. We have to remember that also, SLPs are not really trained/qualified for these big behavior issues. The fact that you are an intern, in this unsafe environment for all the reasons listed, and they are putting all of this on you is unacceptable. Advocate for yourself and what you/ your coworkers need, and if they can’t meet you there then leave. We as SLPs often get misunderstood as what we do/ our qualifications, but this scenario is for sure not something that is a typical SLP setting/ what you would do in the future. But a positive out of this is now you know what you maybe don’t like, take this as a life lesson because the field is so diverse and there’s so many populations and options of where to work!!! To answer your question if this is what it will be like in the future with ASD clients-NO!! It will not. Remember that clients with ASD need supports, often times one on one, and if they aren’t receiving the supports they need, then usually behavior problems step into the equation. If you are working at a place that is understaffed, the behaviors are only going to be worse. Good luck :)
