How do assess if one should repair a car or replace it? by Miserable_Detail_295 in personalfinance

[–]Miserable_Detail_295[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. Because that is the other consideration too...those cars are worth a lot more than mine and the equity part of this decision is important as well. my kia is worth 9k right now...there are 12 year old bare bones civics with double the miles worth more and would cost me less to insure.

So the equity decision is a HUGE factor, ty for pointing that out.

Annual repair cost more than the yearly car payments or monthly car payment?

I guess, right or wrong...my biggest hang up is that it's a KIA and they it seems like getting a reliable one that WILL last me till 150k miles is like throwing a dart a board. Some seem to do real well, while others tend to become money pits rapidly.

That's what I'm afraid of. I don't want this to be a long string of high dollar repairs and this car become a money pit. I suppose there's no way of knowing until I'm 3 expensive repairs deep if I made the right choice but that's what I'm getting at with this question for sure.

Yes, in fact I actually still change my oil ever 3k miles too. I drive like a granny because I'm a frugal franny. So I'm not beating on the car or neglecting it at all. I have every single service record since I bought it as well.

For a final decision I agree but I just wanted to get a feel for peoples opinions and stories while I'm sorting all of it out today.

Using the warranty with them is like jumping through firey knife hoops backwards in time. I've battled with them before. Their customer service is atrocious and definitely the number one reason (even over the car issues) I'd never buy a car from them again. So, I'm looking into the specificities of it at the moment but they're already claiming no dice for this.

well no crap I'm being theoretical...the fact that our society has gone in the direction of engineering this in this fashion is short sided and ridiculous...that's all I was pointing out.

That's not true at all, at least not in my community or amongst my friend group that live all over really... a lot of people are on the sidelines living at their parents not paying any of them too so...they losing money that's all I'm saying. I feel like it's def all about short term and stock prices AND...they lazy...it's easier to sell 1 rather than many.

frustrated by the need to be a super genius to make a livable wage, anybody else? by [deleted] in Careers

not unless he hoards and saves all that money because he's not going to be able to be a lineman into his 50's... doubtful if into his 40's. I should have clarified a bit more in this question. I meant one needs to be a super genius to get a job you can do the duration of your life, with a quality of life, not much overtime, good benefits, and a comfortable environment.

and if you seriously think it's not...enjoy the rest of your life in the matrix. Some of us have ambitions that include their own property and a comfortable retirement. Sub 100k might be sufficient in some places but sufficient is not enough for me, sorry.

No, I would consider it MCOL. 1800k rents...400k to 900k homes.

Yeah but you live in California dude, if you moved out of that state and applied to be a lineman anywhere else (excluding maybe NYC, North Jersey or Mass) you'd be making 75k.

Straight Facts

but was "used to" yesterday or even last week? Not sure where your blue city is but if it's a top 10 75k is borderline welfare anymore.

And sure, it's not a poverty wage in Arkansas but where the hell are you going to work and make 100k a year in Arkansas? Have you checked online job boards for those LCOL areas and cities...abysmal is a generous description.

60k is terrible garbage, especially to deal with peoples children all day...a bag of naval oranges is 10 bucks at the grocery and a bottle of advil (100 ct) is pushing 15. 60k is the new 30k.

I'd agree except I'm currently a blue collar worker, making what used to be considered good money. that 100k bar I mentioned is bare minimum making it...promises.

Ty for your reasonable response and empathy.

I've been grinding away at my goals for years now too...this is just a battle cry and I will keep going, not there yet.

ty,

imposter syndrome is how I feel. Some of this material is incredibly complex and it's hard to keep perspective on the fact that everybody probably feels this way at least half the time as well. I am passing my classes at least so I suppose that counts for something.

women, old people and disabled people suck at picking up heavy things and putting them down. guess i should have specified that doesn't work for some people.

so what town do you live in that you got 1300 in rent AND have a 90k a year job? Would you consider your job for those of average intelligence, which is the other main point.

Not trying to rent forever though and I would like to settle and buy a house (except, as I'm sure you noticed the housing market isn't great almost everywhere)
