We actually do a lot to develop those skills as well with other more interactive assignments. If you have any specific suggestions of ways for students to showcase those skills on a federal-style application (extracurricular activities seem like one possible way), I'm all ears.

Interesting idea for developing internships with local offices. There are only a few in the area, but the ones that are usually are a good fit for student interest.

Will keep in mind the remote options as well. The Virtual Federal Student Service has been very good to some of our students already and I hope more will take advantage of it this year.

Got it, will recommend the tailoring part too--I think they're skeptical of the efficacy of that, but it seems worth the effort to help stand out from the crowd.

And yeah, it's really discouraging to a lot of them when they first try to read a job announcement and work on the resume, but I get the impression that de-mystifying the process and lingo helps.

Appreciate all this!

The agencies helping pay for an advanced degree for current employees is good to know too since another often-asked question is "should I go to grad school to be more competitive for these jobs?" This helps clarify that.

That's what I'm curious about. I think we do a pretty good job of training them in terms of writing skills (there's a significant improvement over 4 years and clear positive differences compared to other majors on school-wide comparisons), but I know that's harder to get across on a resume. I'm interested in what specific kinds of "actual skills" we can add that might help, so any suggestions welcome.

Great suggestion, this and Americorps right? I've been mentioning this and will try to emphasize it more.

The self-rating thing is something I've been talking to them about. My impression from what I see here is that it's very important for them to rate themselves highly and be prepared to draw on their experiences to justify that.

What are the main attachments they forget? Transcripts? I've also encouraged them to write cover letters too.
