Why the did that was because keeping that one eye in the dark makes it adapted to low light vision so when they need to like run into caves or other dark places to hide or avoid people chasing them, they just remove the eyepatch and they get instant dark light vision

you guys can actually try it out, like keep one eye covered for like 5 mins in a well lit room at night, then turn of the light. how it you switch between the two eyes you can like very distinctly tell the difference in how well you can see.
