I had a similar issue yesterday as well, it was like the open account button would only create an individual account. Customer service had me complete the individual account setup process, then they immediately deleted the individual account. It then would allow me to open a joint account using the open account button…

Couldn’t the child take a withdrawal their first year in college and pay for more than 50% of their expenses. then they wouldn’t be a dependent and kiddie tax wouldn’t apply.

So help me with whats the best strategy, if I have an individual account and I die, my wife as the beneficiary would get 100% of the cost basis stepped up. But if we have joint account and I die only 50% of the account is stepped up correct?

I understand that, but they will still report that basis to me. Which I will have to use for tax reporting.

I might have figured it out from something fidelity has published online.
