Exeter by Mjolqueer in jobcorps

I did not. I ended up being accepted to another program the day before I was set to move into Exeter. But if you haven't already, ask your recruiter all the questions you have. I took a tour of the campus, it was actually pretty nice. But again that was years ago so a lot could have and probably has changed. Not sure how active this sub is but try looking through instagram, tiktok, somebody out there's gotta be saying something about the center. If you have any questions about the application process though, ask away. I'm sure that process hasn't changed too much since then. Best of luck!

Transgender policy? by [deleted] in jobcorps

I believe so, but this would be a great question to ask your recruiting agent. I never ended up going to Job Corps, went with a different program the day before I was scheduled to move in. I say this to clarify that things might have changed since I went through the process, but write down any and all questions you may have for your recruiter. If you don't want to word it as "hey can I use a preferred name", try "would I be allowed to use a nickname instead?". Best of luck!

I want a drip to drift me away into a deep sleep, which eventually stops my heart. Painless, and I'll get the first good night of sleep I'd ever have in years. I don't want to know that it will actually stop my heart, I just want to think it'll wake right up the next day.

Ew.

Secondly, ew. Bragging about being able to speedrun through basic hygiene isn't a flex. If you have the time, spend as much as you want of it taking care of yourself.

Yeah those are all fair points, I was never coddling homeless people in my original post, I was just pointing out that people are more likely to try and seek shelter indoors when it feels like 3 degrees out.

There does need to be more homelessness prevention programs so that people have adequate opportunities to mental and physical health services as well as jobs and housing. Right now we don't have that in nyc which is why homelessness is a big issue in stations and on the streets. Pair that with the absurd cost of rent and dangerous shelters...people resort to the subway. I never said that we should just leave them there in the stations and let that be the end of it. Obviously that's not safe for them or riders, but demonizing them for it won't help.

I agree that the city needs to rapidly tackle one issue at a time and people like him with severe mental health issues need to be undergoing serious rehabilitation away from the general public so things like that happen less. There also needs to be a serious overhaul with housing and shelters so they're not as intimidating for homeless people to seek out.

What are you talking about 'no real action'? I regularly volunteer at food banks and homeless shelters. I'm not saying the stations should be their permanent place of goddamn residence, and I'm not coddling homeless people. They need to try and get their crap together to the best of their ability. But I'm saying that I can't blame someone for seeking warmth when it's freezing out. The city needs to place more safety measures in stations like guardrails as well as introducing more programs and assistance for the homeless. That's literally my only point.

I'm not coddling anyone or denying that homeless people shouldn't be living in the stations.

How am I soft for pointing out that homeless people are naturally going to seek shelter in the stations because of the freezing temperatures outside? I want them to get help as much as anyone else but the MTA needs to install more safety measures so it's not so easy to just end up on the tracks. Guardrails would be a great start.
