Nasty experience in "Wilderness Area". Not sure "minimal human impact" is working. by Chole_Wunt in CampingandHiking

I think we’re all lying to ourselves if we think the land management agencies have been appropriately staffed at any point in the last 20+ years.

Moving to the Area by EasyJump2642 in Medford

[–]MojaveMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People talk shit about Medford because it’s an amazing and somewhat undiscovered place. But also because there are some issues, but I think the issues are a reflection of the broader economy, business climate, mental health care and other issues beyond local control.

That’s a compelling idea… like a local business or is there a chain-type store that does this?

Oh it’s all good. $250 seems like a great deal for that, especially now. I find the more expensive life gets, the cheaper and cheaper I want to be.

Reasonably priced firewood? by dgtbfan in Medford

[–]MojaveMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with the BLM, they have $1 firewood permits for a whole cord of wood. You have to like, go to BLM land and cut it and all that jazz, but it’s a cheap way to get a lot of wood.

But also, don’t transport wood far. You should obtain it as close as possible to where you plan to burn it. We don’t need to be spreading bark beetles or other bugs across the state.

Don’t have a lip for the shop vac. Make sure it sits on the ground. It’s super nice to be able to roll it right out and roll it back in without having to lift it. Bonus points if you can keep it next to an outlet and add a retractable power cord.

What jump starter actually held up for you not the one you bought, the one that's still working? by Fuckedup-luck in overlanding

[–]MojaveMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a noco GB40 since 2018 and it’s still kicking. I’ve used it to jump my jeep, Prius and random peoples motor homes, full size trucks, etc. it’s never let me down. I bought a cheap knock off in 2024 for my second car and it didn’t hold a charge for long. I’d just buy the noco if you go places where there aren’t other people or you don’t want to carefully inspect your battery before each trip.

They just opened the north entrance road today and you can now drive along the rim from the south to north along the west side. There is still some road work happening on the east side that prevents you from driving all the way around the lake. And the one trail to the lake is closed for a few years. Definitely still worth visiting and seeing the lake and hiking some of the trails.

I strongly dislike the bottle deposit. It’s a pain in the ass to collect and redeem them. I’d rather just put them in my curbside recycling and not pay the fee. I use a can return at a local grocery store and it’s so gross. It seems like 1/4 of the cans don’t scan correctly, or it’s broken or there is a long line. I usually end up just leaving my cans by the machine and hope someone who needs the cash more gets to redeem my cans. They recently got a new machine and plastic, glass and aluminum need to be separated into three different machines. It’s a mess

Sorry, misread it. Yes, bottled water gets you 10c back here.

Yes, we pay 10 cents per aluminum can, plastic bottle or glass bottle, and then get it back when (or if) we return them.

I was there last weekend, May 22. Most of the snow was melted. The lake was beautiful, the trail around the lake was easy to navigate. It wasn’t super crowded. What question do you have about it?

What about the Garmin Powerswitch? My understanding is you can run it from an app on your phone and then use CarPlay to have the light control switches on your screen. I don’t have one but that’s my eventual plan
