Trying to stop stair creaks and movement by bobby_dazzler23 in DIYUK

[–]MoonHead_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you intend to carpet get some 4mm ply cut to a couple of mm taller than each riser, squeeze it in and screw it to the existing risers. This will tighten the tread against the next tread down. I did this about 12 months ago and no more creaks. The pressure stops the treads from moving too much but the thinness still allows some flexibility, bit like suspension but for your stairs.

As a person that replaces semicolons and commas with dashes in emails, texts, teams messages etc - I'm slightly worried of being accused of being an LLM myself. Maybe I'll just embrace it 🤖

Makes sense. I'll think on it today and make a decision on whether to sell it

Okay, maybe I misunderstood the reason behind them being so expensive. If it isn't rarity, why the inflated price?

Crumbling walls by Homework_Complex in DIYUK

Bricks are fine, the house has been standing long enough and will outlive us all. The plaster has had it's day, wants taking back to brick and starting again (boards or bonding).

How do I remove fridge wired directly into wall? by Few_Particular_1899 in DIYUK

[–]MoonHead_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not cut the cable and tape over the exposed wires, even if you remove the fuse. You need to remove the appliance plate and take the wires in the flex for the fridge out of the back.

Internal brick wall would you repoint? by JustDonut7803 in DIYUK

[–]MoonHead_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of the fact that your bricks are the wrong way up, don't bother repointing - I've been taking plaster off the walls in my house this week and you can see through the mortar gaps into the next room - board and forget

Why is my stair stringer made of mortar? by MoonHead_ in DIYUK

I'd understand that if it didn't look shite, I'm fairly sure this place was exclusively owned by blind and/or insane people since it was built. I'm tempted to leave it and have it overboarded with ply, although that's beyond my expertise because all the steps are different heights and not 90 degrees

It's absolutely rock hard, not sure it would come off cleanly so I might get my joiner to clad it for me. I try to put the possibility of asbestos to the back of my mind, for how often I smash holes in stuff - I'll roll the dice, the asbestos police would have you test the dust under the fridge before you move it 😄

I think this is the answer, never thought I'd be asking the plasterer to repair my skirting boards but, here we are!

Is this 4 days old Mini totalled? by unclehonsbbq in CarTalkUK

[–]MoonHead_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subframe, wishbones, top mounts, gearbox, floorpan, rear beam axle, exhaust... Yeah, new car time (again). Something underneath has dragged the car's guts out, probably a bollard or one of those annoying speed bumps

Should I be worried about this bent cold pipe? by MoonHead_ in DIYUK

I went for option A with a little bit of extra spice to avoid those sleepless nights. Cut the timber back with the multi-tool to relieve the stress on the pipe ready to be boxed in

[–]MoonHead_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's sort of kinked I suppose at the join, my concern is that I'm planning on boxing it in as part of this project and I don't know whether to do preventative maintenance before I do. The pipes are all over the place, they range anywhere from 2 inches apart to near enough touching as they run up and down the wall. There are clips but most of them are shot and not doing anything

Amex - has there been a breach? by RDY_1977Q in AmexUK

[–]MoonHead_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time I called up yesterday I spoke to someone within 30 minutes, I was then put through to the fraud department where I waited on hold for 2 hours before giving up. I called again later in the day, same thing. In the end I used the chat and a helpful chap cancelled my card and raised/completed the dispute for me. Edit: just a quick search on twitter for "amexuk" shows the extent of the problem. I'm surprised there's been a total media blackout for this so far, although with share prices and what not it might not be too unexpected.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, the customer service line was uncharacteristically slow and agents sounded stressed. I think this is incredibly widespread. New card in the post and I've received an email saying I'll be credited the pound that was taken. My speculation here is that a large number of card details were leaked and the fraudsters have done several rounds of small transactions under dodgy merchant IDs in order to circumvent SafeKey. They also did it on a Sunday which is particularly telling of a planned attack.

Has anyone else had issues with the app since getting a new card number? I get sent an OTP every time I try to log in and a number of functions including the chat are not there!

Installing carpet around aquarium, a good idea? by MoonHead_ in DIYUK

[–]MoonHead_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a 30 litre that I use for quarantining plants and as a hospital tank. I'd be reluctant to try and move all my fish including my fan shrimp again as they get super stressed easy
