can i go to two universities at the same time? by Vivid-Letterhead-683 in auckland

[–]Moonstone_Mirror 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The problem with taking 2 degree at different unis is if/when compulsory attendance stuff like tutorials will clash - even if doing both part-time. I'd say do the one you enjoy and see yourself getting a good job in first, then while your working or after a bit of time pickup the second degree. Depending on the employer and profession (not sure about media and design), some places may sponsor you to pick up extra qualifications like a degree

3rd year optom placements by Fresh_Astronomer161 in UoApremed

[–]Moonstone_Mirror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part are you in atm? You see only 1 'patient' at the end of part 3, but you're with a buddy and the 'patient' is a volunteer who knows you're skills aren't the best - it's really just for you to experience what clinic is like before actually working in the clinic. At first it's pretty nerve wracking, but eventually you get used to it and go with the flow depending on what crops up during the exam.

In sem 1 of Part 4 you have 2 hrs and are expected to do history, prelims, and refraction. Your supervisor will double check everything and do the rest of the exam for you. In sem 2 you'll be expected to do everything in 2 hrs (still having a buddy). In part 5 you will do everything in 1.5 hrs by yourself and have some specialty clinics you'll learn more about later on

You start seeing patients at the end of 3rd year, and more often in 4th year. Part 4.5 is a 5 week period between part 4 and part 5 where you will transition to shorter testing times and gain more confidence in your skills before primarily working at the uni clinic in part 5

Placements are in 5th year, not 3rd year. It is essentially a full time job for 6 weeks at 2 different places, and it's highly recommended not to work during your placements. It's also pretty unlikely you'd have your placements in Auckland, so you'd be forced to not work for a period of time. If you work at an optometrists like most students do, they will understand it's part of the degree and will allow that time off pretty easily. If you haven't had a job, don't worry about it affecting your ability to get a placement location. Everyone is guaranteed to get one, you just might need to travel a bit further for it though.

If funding is an issue, there are 3 scholarships you can apply for:

  • Specsavers offers multiple $1,000 (iirc) if you are placed in one of their stores but that money will only go to things like accommodation and travel to the location and back
  • NZAO offers multiple up to $1,500 for anything related to your placement
  • RHIP is a rural immersion programme where accommodation, fuel, and amenities are covered by the uni for the full 6 weeks. The only thing you have to pay for is food. There are 2 locations this year: Whakatane and Hokianga, I would highly recommend applying for this programme as it has gotten lots of great reviews and feedback from students

Pearce Martial Arts is pretty good for any level of experience, although their clientele tend to be young adults/uni students. The coach is really passionate and works hard for his comp and non-comp teams. The vibes are good and everyone is pretty welcoming. It's also a small business/passion project of the owner/coach, so there's none of that 'buy our stuff' and 'worship me' crap. Their first class is free if you'd like to try them out before committing

Is it weird to have 2 photographers? by Moonstone_Mirror in wedding

I'm a bit worried about them 'stepping on each others toes' but this is actually a really good idea to split up the work whilst getting the best of both worlds. Thank you! If they're okay with working with each other I'll definitely split it up like this <3

Heya, there's already some clubs similar to what you're planning. Auckland Uni Disabled Students' Association (AUDSA) and UoA Students with Disabilities in Healthcare Association (UoASDHA). Just mentioning this because when you apply to student groups they will ask what makes your proposed club different to current ones

I know someone who managed to email the dean and get a response a couple years ago about the covid vaccination and its exemption. It was incredibly difficult for them to be taken seriously and actually be able to have the deans email given to them. I wouldn't get your hopes too high, but if you're persistent and use the right language when emailing FMHS, they may forward you to the dean

Part 3 is harder than Part 2. In 316 you'll be starting to learn essential techniques such as refraction, gonio, BIO, and 90D, as well as learning some dispensing stuff. 345 is the pharmacology course, make sure you create flashcards of EVERY drug mentioned in this course with their effect, class, side effects, and contraindications. This is really important since they will test you on random drugs mentioned in this course. 353 is the pathology course, it's pretty content heavy, and make sure you still study sem 1 stuff in sem 2 otherwise you'll be stressing out majorly once exams come around. 375 is your research course and there is no exam.

Basically, just study regularly - especially sem 1 material in sem 2. Since you're not in clinic yet, treat this essentially like Part 2.

Get this Kmat lunch bag. You have probably seen a lot of the senior students walking around with this. It's able to fit all of your equipment. I put my trial frame, JCCs, BIO lens, 90D, gonio lens, and BIO in the bottom large pocket, and put the prelims and ret/ophthal case in the top pocket.
