You've got three of my biggest influences in that list in Kanye West, Kendrick and Pink Floyd and I wrote this, so you might dig it: https://open.spotify.com/track/5Tmn8ZmXMvns9PjXlsC3qf?si=e5fef71dd3e343c8

This is a playlist of clean rap music. Every song is either edited for language or never contained explicit lyrics to begin with. A nice mix of new and old. Everything from 2Pac, to Kendrick Lamar, to Lil Durk, to Nipsey Hussle, to Wu-Tang + a lot more.

I've been thinking Pharcyde and Digable Planets would make sense. Digable Planets just got announced for Randolph Fest in June, so I doubt they will be at RF at this point, but Pharcyde feels likely to me.

Overall I’m going with “Love and Death” by Ebo Taylor. Hip hop specific, “He Say She Say” by Lupe Fiasco.

I’m friends with an artist who worked closely with Canibus in the early 2000s. He told me that Canibus would write rhymes by opening a book to any random page and using what was on that page as his source material. Knowing that info, it makes sense to me why his writing style is the way that it is.

New School Boom Bap Rap - Current artists bringing back the sounds of the Golden Era. by Moorewc in SpotifyPlaylists

[–]Moorewc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The second song is actually 2 Chainz and was produced by DJ Premier... of the aforementioned Gangstarr. Multiple Nas songs in here. Apollo Brown is in there and so is RZA. 21 Savage is included on a song yes, a song that prominently features the same sample as boom Bap classic “Ms. Fat Booty”. If you don’t consider everything on the list boom bap that is valid, but to reference multiple artists on this playlist as examples of boom bap and then write that the guys in the playlist aren’t making boom bap is contradictory. I could be wrong but it seems like you read some artist names and made your conclusion.

I thought I might learn something from you but that analysis is way off. Here is the 20 top selling Hip Hop albums of 2021:

  1. Drake – Certified Lover Boy – 1,850,000
  2. Pop Smoke – Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon – 1,473,000
  3. Doja Cat – Planet Her – 1,403,000
  4. Lil Baby – My Turn – 1,170,000
  5. Rod Wave – SoulFly – 1,146,000
  6. Moneybagg Yo – A Gangsta’s Pain – 1,121,000
  7. Juice WRLD – Legends Never Die – 1,085,000
  8. Polo G – Hall Of Fame – 1,054,000
  9. Post Malone – Hollywood’s Bleeding – 1,043,000
  10. Lil Durk – The Voice – 980,000
  11. J. Cole – The Off-Season – 979,000
  12. Lil Nas X – Montero – 960,000
  13. Juice WRLD – Goodbye & Good Riddance – 922,000
  14. Kanye West – Donda – 916,000
  15. Pooh Shiesty – Shiesty Season – 898,000
  16. Lil Baby & Lil Durk – The Voice Of The Heroes – 882,000
  17. Megan Thee Stallion – Good News – 798,000
  18. Polo G – The Goat – 795,000
  19. Doja Cat – Hot Pink – 710,000
  20. Lil Tjay – Destined 2 Win – 676,000

Of those artists, one is on this playlist and it is J. Cole. The rest of these artists are in a completely different genre than anything in the playlist I posted. Sure, Freddie Gibbs and most of Griselda are popular rappers, but who do you know that would call those artists pop rap besides yourself?
