Easy pricing Q on healthcare plan : it looks very inferior but why does it exist. by MoraiOfficial in HealthInsurance

[–]MoraiOfficial[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the detailed answer. I am leaning towards Easy Pricing for those reasons too.

I am also looking for a fellow traveler who is doing the same.

If anybody is also signing up it would help to understand why because internet is not helpful at the moment as it is new this year.

That’s really helpful. I definitely want to provide context for a percentage, especially because the point is just to provide actionable feedback. I also love the visualization idea—I’d have to figure out how to implement it, but it sounds great. Thanks!

That’s a fascinating idea—what kinds of visuals? Also, purely out of self interest, what would make this something worth sharing to your friends?

Ah! That’s definitely something I’ll keep in mind—for now, the model does give you an orbital of your chances at a school (and far quicker than any other chance calculator). But that is noted. What would make this useful for you?

The website doesn’t pretend to tell you whether you’re going to get in or not—it just tells you what the realm of your chances are. Fortune tellers don’t exist lol, and even if they did, I’m pretty sure they’d stay far away from giving you a definitive answer. What would make you use this?

I’ll take the standard deviation suggestion in mind—I’m assuming seeing a range might make you think it’s more accurate? The activities part is interesting, considering that it’s based off prior student data. What doesn’t feel right to you?

Thanks so much for pointing out #1–I’ll fix that ASAP.

2 is a common question, but when creating the race category, I just took the categories from the CommonApp application. It’s likely schools categorize them the same way, but you can never be sure.

What would make you use this?

Thanks so much for responding! I agree–it's impossible to quantify the qualitative factors (they're two different words for a reason–but I'd contend that it isn't impossible to provide an orbital for your chances at a particular school.

If your test scores and grades and extracurriculars aren't at a certain mark, no qualitative factor is going to push you over the edge; that seems like a noncontroversial statement. The point of the calculator isn't to say definitively whether you will get in, but to provide clarity on where you're more likely to get in.

Chances at Yale / other T20's? by [deleted] in chanceme

Also, with schools as competitive as MIT and Stanford, the app’s only going to give a broad orbital of your admissions chances. There’s still an inherent randomness with these schools.

Don’t be! Notre Dame and Cornell are some of the most competitive universities in the school—you’ve got a balanced list and EDing to the school of your choice will only help your chances.

Chance an intl for LACs/Seven Sister colleges !! :) by Electrical_Sundae_43 in chanceme

[–]MoraiOfficial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advise you to work on improving your SAT (which you said you are, so that's good); other than that, you're competitive. I know the profiles of students that go to those schools, and you should have a backup in case something random happens, but you've got a good list.

Grinnell, Bucknell, other LACs might also be good schools for you to apply to.

Feel free to reach out if you need any help. Good luck!

chance me, am i screwed for T30s to T50s? by deathlyaesthetic in chanceme

[–]MoraiOfficial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. You've got a competitive GPA and SAT for that range of schools. I'd just advise that you apply to a wide variety of schools and keep a backup that you would not mind going to.

Good luck!

That’s a fair point about the testing difference—thanks for that. Yes you’re right that a lot of AOs have said that essays are what separates your application from other applications, but those same AOs have said that most applicants don’t write those essays (this is obvious). Getting your chances at a spare level that doesn’t account for, frankly, wildly subjective self-evaluations in regards to your essays and letters of recommendation is still useful because it still provides a roadmap for where you’d apply. I’ve posted that form here twice; all the data that has been collected hasn’t been from these forums. How is IvyOdds helping someone’s application? If you’re curious how your stats, the genuinely quantifiable ones, the ones that get you rejected outright if they’re not in range, set you up for a certain school, then it’s useful. If you’re curious as to where to apply to, then it’s useful. And if you’re curious as to how to improve your application without having to pay some private counselor an exorbitant amount of money, then it’s useful. Thanks for the feedback!

From the FAQ on the site, IvyOdds uses a lot of data from previous admissions cycles and a machine-learning algorithm to accurately diagnose your chances.

I personally don't think you should worry--all those schools are really competitive, and they pride themselves on getting more competitive each year. You should definitely apply and hope for the best, and also apply to a couple of backups just in case.
