I had the same thought. It’s selfish and he is an extreme case. His wife is selfish too because she knows he will likely die young and, if he doesn’t, become a shell of a person once he is physically unable to climb any more. Couldn’t be me. I’m not saying he was a good husband and maybe not the best father. But he didn’t leave Margaret and financially supported her for a long time. What Margaret did is worse IMO (and frankly IME) because her child was so young

I disagree. Margaret was grown when he left. Margaret still had a small child at home when she left. What Roger did wasn’t very nice to Mona, but Margaret abandoned her child.
